Marco Rubio Teams with Bob Menéndez, Tim Scott Stumps with Ivanka, and Michelle Obama Surprises Counselor
Subscribe
The White House has released parts of their immigration plan. We break it down below. The NYT reports that Donald Trump had ordered Special Counsel Robert Mueller to be fired last summer. It's worth pointing out that WH Reporter April Ryan reported this very thing last summer. The GOP has been mostly silent on this revelation, with a few exceptions. And Trump responded from Davos with this: Fake news. You know how you feel on Super Bowl Sunday when the team you dislike and bet against takes the field? That’s how folks on the left may feel come Tuesday when 45 delivers his first State of the Union address. The Dems have tapped 37-year-old Congressman Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) to deliver the Democratic response. And in some good ole fashion partisan pettiness, Congressman Mark Pocan (D-WI) is bringing Randy “the Iron Stache” Bryce as his guest. Bryce is challenging House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) for his seat in Congress. Any chance the Iron Stache will show up in uniform and stare at Ryan the entire time and crack his knuckles? Am I the only one who watched WWE in the ‘80s? Sometimes it’s a mind game. That could be their flush. Speaking of flush, the President and First Lady asked the Guggenheim’s Chief Curator to borrow a painting by Vincent van Gogh for their private living quarters. The response? Nope. But they did offer the Trumps a golden toilet. It was the creation of contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan -- in a public restroom on the museum’s fifth floor for visitors to use “should the President and First Lady have any interest in installing it in the White House,” the curator wrote.  And, in world-ending news, the Doomsday Clock is now just two minutes to midnight -- the symbolic hour of the apocalypse. So before we all meet our end, I’m off to the Big Apple. You can catch me this morning in the 11A hour on Fox News; at 6P, I’ll be joining our namesake The Beat with Ari Melber; and on Sunday, I’ll return for some AM Joy with Joy-Ann Reid. Tune in! We’re kicking off the weekend with this...

WH Unveils Immigration Framework as Congress Continues Its Own Work
Ahead of the official unveiling of its immigration plan on Monday, the WH shared the tenets of the plan with Congress yesterday. While the plan offers a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million “Dreamers,” it makes drastic changes to the current immigration system, as well as creating a $25 billion fund for Donald Trump’s wall along the U.S-Mexico border, and additional border security measures. The framework calls for the elimination of the diversity visa lottery system and limits familial migration to the “nuclear” family -- spouses and minor children -- but excludes parents, adult children, and siblings. Immediately, the plan was panned by both the left and the right. The most colorful response on the left comes from Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) who tweeted, “It would be far cheaper to erect a 50-foot concrete statue of a middle finger and point it towards Latin America. Both a wall and the statue would be equally offensive and equally ineffective and both would express Trump’s deeply held suspicion of Latinos.” Immigration hardliners on the right criticized the administration for including a pathway to citizenship for “Dreamers.” The Heritage Foundation called the plan a “non-starter.” Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of Senators calling itself the “Common Sense Coalition” came together to discuss the scope of a centrist, bipartisan bill. Some want a narrow bill that increases border security and puts into law the current protections for DACA recipients, while others insist on more, including a pathway to citizenship. One thing is certain: this issue is far from resolved. More here.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC)
will have a special guest in South Carolina today -- Ivanka Trump. The Senator’s office announced that the pair will host a talk with women about the tax reform bill and how it affects the Child Tax Credit. They will be meeting at the Westin Poinsett Hotel in downtown Greenville at 12:30P. The gathering will be a small, invitation-only event. Read more here.

Horsford Launches Bid to Return to Congress
Former Congressman Steven Horsford wants his old job back. The one-term lawmaker announced his congressional bid on Thursday, hoping to take the seat he occupied from 2013-2015 and currently held by Congressman Rubén Kihuen (D-NV), who is not running for reelection. Horsford was the first African American to represent Nevada in Congress. “The Trump Administration has launched a relentless assault on immigrants and fanned the flames of hate and division. And our fundamental rights of freedom of speech and freedom of the press are under attack every day. Well, I'm ready to fight back.” During his tenure in Congress, Horsford was a primary co-sponsor of HR15, the comprehensive immigration reform bill, and he helped pass several public lands bills. He previously served in the Nevada state Senate from 2005 to 2012 and was Nevada's first African American state Senate Majority Leader. He is currently President of Resources+, a certified MBE consulting firm specializing in workforce strategy, strategic partnerships, diversity media, and communications. He is married to Dr. Sonya Horsford and has three children. Nevada’s Fourth Congressional District covers parts of Las Vegas, Clark County, and five rural counties. More here.

Is Keith Ellison Considering an AG Run in MN?
Politico reports that DNC Deputy Chair Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) is  exploring a run for Minnesota Attorney General. According to their reporting, Ellison has expressed discontent about being the number two at the DNC, frustrated that he does not have more leeway to steer the party. The DC scuttlebutt is that he occasionally clashes with Chair Tom Pérez. If elected to the post, he would join a coalition of other AGs who have battled the Trump administration on a myriad of issues, from ‘sanctuary cities’ to net neutrality. Moreover, his close ties to Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) would give him a huge advantage over lesser-known candidates in the race for AG. This is not the first time Ellison’s name has been in the rumor mill. When former Senator Al Franken retired, there was a lot of speculation that he would take the opportunity to leap to the upper chamber. We’re not calling either yet. After 2016 political predictions went haywire, anything is possible. But the DC rumor mill is always churning. We’ll keep you posted. Ellison has until February 6th to declare his candidacy. Ken Chenault Joins Airbnb’s Board
Airbnb is adding outgoing American Express CEO Ken Chenault to its board. He will be the first African American to join. Last week, Facebook announced Chenault's appointment to its board, where he is also a first. Airbnb is the second-most-valuable start-up in the U.S., trailing only Uber. Last year, it raised an additional $1 billion, bringing its valuation to $30 billion. The board still doesn't include any women, but Airbnb told CNBC that it is in serious discussions with a number of other people about joining the board. "The next member will be a woman, and she'll be joining later this year," a spokesperson told CNBC. Some suggestions: Ariel Investments President Mellody Hobson, Obama’s former SBA chief María Contreras Sweet, Starbucks COO Rosalind Brewer, former WH Domestic Policy Council Director Melody Barnes, former WH Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Cecilia Muñoz, or BET Founder Sheila Johnson? Call us, guys. We’ve got binders full of women. Chenault will officially join the board on February 8th. Chenault said in October that he will retire from American Express in February after nearly 17 years leading the company. More here.

AP Announces Marijuana Beat
The Associated Press has announced a new team of more than a dozen journalists covering issues around marijuana legalization and regulation. Noreen Gillespie, Deputy Managing Editor for U.S. news, says the cross-format team will cover the emerging economy, forecast the legal and regulatory showdowns that could emerge, and document how California and other states are changing marijuana culture in America. She goes on to say that the team’s goal will also be to peer beyond the U.S. and report on supply and economic implications from Mexico and Canada. After years of the criminal justice system disproportionately criminalizing communities of color and on the heels of a disproportionate number of White Americans capitalizing off the market, there was no mention of this disparity in their coverage. The AP did, however, recently name Errin Haines Whack their Race and Ethnicity writer. Though she is not on this team, hopefully, the two will intersect. More here.
NFL Rejects “Please Stand” Ad from Veterans Group
The NFL has rejected an ad for the Super Bowl from a veterans advocacy group. American Veterans is now accusing the league of censorship for not accepting its advertisement. The group wanted to run an ad in the game’s commemorative program with a message aimed at those protesting the national anthem: “Please Stand.” The NFL rejected the initial ad and instead asked the organization to consider other options for its message, such as “Please Honor Our Veterans” and “Please Stand for Our Veterans,” according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy. McCarthy said the organization never responded before the program went to print. More here.

PR Governor Says Island Has No Money to Pay Creditors
Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló warned yesterday that the island will carry budget gaps for the next four years and won’t be able to pay a dime of its $72 billion debt until at least 2022. The island economy had already been struggling when Hurricane Maria hit, and the post-hurricane recovery has been slow -- about 30% of residents still don’t have power and an estimated 200,000 have already left the island. Rosselló estimates that the economy will shrink 11% and the population drop by about 8% next year. The Governor made his comments while presenting a revised post-storm fiscal plan. The new plan includes a proposal to privatize the electric utility company and also assumes Puerto Rico will receive $22 billion from private insurance companies and at least $35 billion in federal funds for storm recovery efforts. However, federal funds are currently being withheld by the Trump administration because it believes the island has enough cash reserves. The federal control board overseeing Puerto Rico’s finances would have to approve the new plan, which is not expected to sit well with creditors. More here.
Rubio and Menéndez Push DOJ, UN on Venezuela
Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL)
and Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) are urging the Justice Department and the United Nations to look into allegations against senior Venezuelan government officials, including President Nicolás Maduro, of drug trafficking, gang support, and other illicit activities. In a letter on Thursday, the Senators urged Donald Trump to take up action on Venezuela and requested that Trump direct "[United Nations] Ambassador Nikki Haley to call for the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency session or related meeting on Venezuela, and for the United Nations to create a special envoy for Venezuela to monitor and address these issues." And yesterday, the Senators requested that AG Jeff Sessions and DOJ “immediately pursue an investigation into the credible allegations of drug trafficking and other illicit activities by senior Venezuelan government officials in order to better understand the nexus between criminal actors and members of Maduro’s inner circle.” Read more here.
