Timely Warning – Robbery

On June 22, 2022 at 2:29 am, the UC San Diego Police Department received a report of a robbery that occurred at the UC San Diego Medical Center at Hillcrest parking lot at the corner of First Avenue and West Montecito Way at 1:45 am. The reporting party stated that a male approached her as she got out of her car and took property by a threat of force.

The suspect is described by reporting party as a male in his 40s or 50s with a slender build. He was last seen fleeing eastbound into a nearby apartment complex.
At this time, the suspect is not in custody.
The crime was reported to the San Diego Police Department.

If you are a victim of a robbery:

Your personal safety is more important than money or merchandise.
Believe the robber if they say they have a gun, knife or other weapon.
Try to maintain a calm demeanor. Don’t make sudden moves or try to apprehend the suspect yourself. Concentrate on remembering a description of the suspect and when safe to do so, call police immediately by dialing 9-1-1.
Assess the situation. Remember every situation is different; you are the only one who can decide the appropriate course of action.
Seek medical attention as required.

To help reduce the risk of being the victim of a robbery:

Report suspicious activity immediately to the UC San Diego Police Department by calling 9-1-1.
Think ahead. Thinking about your options ahead of time and discussing them with others may help you make quick decisions under difficult circumstances.
Use the UC San Diego Safety Escort Program. Call (858) 534-WALK, available daily from dusk to dawn.
Whenever possible, travel well-lit, busy routes. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas. Have your keys in your hand as you approach your door.
Avoid displaying and carrying large sums of money in public. Only carry the credit cards you need.
Be careful with purses or wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, but do not loop or wrap straps around you. A purse snatcher could injure you. Keep wallets in an inside pocket.
When using an ATM, have your ATM card ready and in your hand as you approach the ATM. Be careful that no one can see you entering your pin and do not count or visually display any money you received from the ATM.
Know the location of Campus Emergency Telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
