ANDRZEJ WAJDA CENTENARY
Marking the 100th anniversary of his birth and the 10th anniversary of his death, Poland declared 2026 the year of Andrzej Wajda—one of the most influential figures in Polish and world cinema, whose work and public engagement played a decisive role in bringing Polish film to international audiences. Having gained global recognition with films such as Kanał, Ashes and Diamonds, and The Promised Land, Wajda remained actively involved in cultural and educational initiatives throughout his life. His defiant outlook was also matched with a poetic sensibility, powerful visual language and a mastery of narrative, and his films are as moving and inspiring as they are provocative and influential. Wajda’s impact expand beyond Poland to influence filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, and he was awarded an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2000.

KANAL, the second movie in Andrzej Wajda’s War Trilogy, was the first movie about the Warsaw uprising. Set during the final days of the confrontation, members of the Home Army and various civilians make their way through the Warsaw sewers seeking escape from the Nazis. Featuring a screenplay by Jerzy Stefan Stawinski, an officer of the Home Army during the uprising. Subtitles. 96 min.

ASHES AND DIAMONDS was a major 1948 Polish novel endorsing the new Polis regime and disparaging the members of the Polish underground who didn’t accept it. Working with the novelist, Andrzej Wajda transforms the novel, compressing the action into one day, and focusing on Maciek, a member of the former Nazi resistance, who’s now assigned the task of assassinating a key member of the communist party. Maciek is played by Zbigniew Cybulski, a riveting actor, who often played rebels and was considered the Polish James Dean. Subtitles. 103 min.

His life comes into focus with the murder of George Floyd, which prompts him to travel to the US to photograph the ensuing protests. The documentary SHOOT THE PEOPLE follows Harriman from the US to Gaza to South Africa as the photographer works to alter our perception of various peoples struggling for their rights. 93 min.
