ACTIVATE PROJECT: PROACTIVE ACADEMIC ADVISING |
What is Proactive Academic Advising?
Proactive academic advising is a student-centered approach that involves actively reaching out to students to provide guidance and support before issues arise. Unlike traditional advising, where students seek help when they encounter problems, proactive advising anticipates potential challenges and addresses them before they stymie students' persistence. This proactive approach includes regular check-ins, personalized communication, and the use of data to identify and assist students who may need additional support.
Benefits of Proactive Academic Advising Include:
|
- Improves Persistence and Graduation Rates: By identifying and addressing academic and personal challenges early, proactive advising helps students stay on track to graduate on time.
-
Enhances Student Experience: Regular and meaningful interactions with advisors foster a supportive environment, making students feel valued and understood.
- Allows for Data-Informed Decisions: Utilizing data allows advisors to tailor their support to each student's unique needs, leading to more effective interventions.
-
Reduces Time and Cost to Completion: Early intervention can prevent issues that might delay graduation, saving students time and money.
|
The Office of Undergraduate Studies will be holding training sessions throughout September to equip academic advisors with the necessary tools and strategies to implement this model effectively. These sessions will cover various aspects of proactive advising, including the use of advising notes, campaign calendars, and monitoring key courses. Email aactrain@advising.utah.edu for more information.
