Dear Faculty,
We have been notified by several students that they have been activated by the National Guard. This email will serve as a reminder of our policy for military-related absences.
Military activation can be as short as a day or go on for an indeterminant amount of time and the students should not be penalized for these absences. Activated students may have limited access to email and other communications based upon the nature of their assignments.
When it has been confirmed that a student must be absent due to miliary service obligations, the Office of Records and Registration will notify the student’s professors and advisors.
Here are some highlights from the policy:
The faculty will provide reasonable accommodations to complete assignments and other coursework. These accommodations may include, but not limited to:
- An opportunity to submit coursework on an alternative schedule agreed upon by the student and faculty member
- Selection of comparable coursework as assigned by the faculty member
- Complete coursework as an Independent Study, being given an incomplete grade for the course, using the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading option, or withdrawing from the course.
Faculty can contact Donnie Martin, Assistant Director of Veterans and Military Services, with any questions at martindb@newpaltz.edu.
We wish to thank all of our military affiliated students and their families for their sacrifices and service to our country.
