UNCG Research Excellence Awards, nominations due December 13
For full-time UNCG faculty members who exemplify the university's research mission. An Early Career Research award and Senior Research award may be given each year. Learn more

Global Engagement Office Kohler Awards spring deadlines: January 15, March 15
UNCG's Global Engagement Office provides Kohler Awards of up to $1000 to faculty and staff for international research, special projects, student programs, or internationalizing a curriculum. Applications are reviewed 4 times a year. The next application deadline is October 15. Learn more

Martha Blakeney Hodges Fellowship Program, UNCG students apply by March 7
Sponsored by the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives, this program provide undergraduate and graduate students at UNCG with a hands-on learning opportunity in archives and academic librarianship. The Hodges Fellowship Program is a 9-month (August through April) learning opportunity, with a stipend of $6000 per year. Learn more

Open Access Publishing Fund, apply anytime
The fund, managed by University Libraries, provides up to $1500 reimbursement for open-access publishing costs. The author/applicant must be full-time faculty, full-time EHRA staff, or an enrolled graduate student. Applications are reviewed as they are received. Learn more

NC Mountains to Sea Graduate Research Fellowship, apply by December 16
Open to full-time graduate students at North Carolina’s colleges and universities. Research projects should align with priorites of the NC Water Research Resources Institute and/or NC Sea Grant. Learn more

Summer Internship Program at WFU Center for Precision Medicine, apply by January 31
8-week summer internship program for undergrads offers a hands-on research experience in the laboratories and research groups of the Center for Precision Medicine. Interns will also gain mentorship experience by mentoring a high school student. For students who will have completed their sophomore or junior year by summer 2025. $5000 stipend. Learn more

Students can find NSF-sponsored training opportunities with NSF-ETAP
The NSF Education and Training Application site lets students and recent grads search and apply for NSF-sponsored training opportunities, including summer programs like Research Experiences for Undergrads (REUs) and International Research Experiences for Students (IRES). Faculty who direct NSF-sponsored training programs can also post opportunities on the site. Learn more

American Philosophical Society's Franklin Research Grants, apply by December 2
Intended to help meet cost of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes, the purchase of research materials, fieldwork costs, or laboratory research expenses. The primary program has a deadline of December 2, but some specialized programs have later deadlines. Learn more

NC Innovation statewide RFP, submit pre-app by December 13
Applied researchers at all 16 UNC System universities are eligible for grants through NCI. Grants are intended to help commercialize research breakthroughs and accelerate the transition from academia to industry. A pre-application is required, with a deadline of December 13. Learn more

RTI University Scholars Program, phase 1 applications due January 23
This fellowship program provides support for distinguished academic researchers from UNC system schools (and Duke) to spend scholarly leave time at RTI International to actively collaborate with RTI experts. 2025-2026 priorities include climate change, education research, health and food security, data science, and more. Learn more

Gideon Wasserberg (Biology) receives continuation award from NC DHHS Division of Public Health to conduct statewide tick survey.

Julia Mendez (Psychology) and Danielle Crosby (HHS, Human Development & Family Studies) receive continuation award from Child Trends for the Center for Research on Hispanic Children and Families.

Igor Erovenko and Jonathan Rowell (Mathematics and Statistics) receive continuation award from University of Kansas for the collaborative NSF project RAISE IHBEM: Project INSIGHT: INclusion of challenges from Social Isolation Governed by Human behavior through Transformative research in epidemiological modeling.

Jasmine DeJesus (Psychology) receives continuation award from University of Michigan for the NIH project The Development of Eating Behavior in Infancy: Associations with Behavior, Diet, and Growth to Age 6 years.

... UNCG has a special process for applying to a foundation?

There are many local, state, and national foundations that could be interested in funding your research or scholarship. Depending on the foundation, your proposal could take a different route than a typical external funding proposal. The university may have an existing relationship with a foundation and likes to coordinate communication, so before you start an application to a foundation, you should notify OSP by filling out the Foundation Proposal Request Form. And, because some foundations fund only 501c3 nonprofits, you may ultimately work with UNCG's Office of Development to submit via the UNCG's 501c3 entity, the UNCG Excellence Foundation. (If you are seeking a fellowship offered by a foundation, these extra steps usually don't apply. Contact our office to be sure.) The UNCG Scholar website has a list of local and NC foundations, along with more info about applying for foundation funding.
