FAQ of the Month
With career fairs and conferences coming up, how do I introduce myself to employers? What if they aren't necessarily targeting graduate students in their hiring?
As you've probably guessed, preparation is key! Regardless of when you'll finish your degree, it makes sense to be ready for conversations that could result in helpful connections. On that note, here are two things you can do:
Prepare your elevator pitch. Being prepared to answer opening questions such as “What do you do?” or “Tell me about yourself" will make introductions easier and lead to more meaningful dialogue. For more about crafting your elevator pitch, see page 6 of the Graduate Student Career Guide (linked below in the Spotlight section).

Do your research. Because employers attending career fairs often recruit larger numbers of undergraduate-level candidates, they may be less knowledgeable re: open positions for those with advanced degrees. Make it easier for them by researching individual employers and the types of positions that might fit with your degree. This will allow you to say something like, "I noticed you have [describe specific positions/roles] on your team. Could you speak to those roles or tell me who I could contact to learn more?" Review the list of organizations attending our Fall Career Fair on Friday, Sept. 27 and search under "class years" for those seeking grad students.

Spotlight on ... Resume Essentials
