Mongan ReflectionsFrom the Director
| |
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.” — Benjamin Franklin There is little debate on the importance of mentoring, yet creating a culture in which mentoring is truly valued is not automatic nor universal. In the life of a researcher, the currency of success is often measured in publications and grants. Except for highly competitive mid-career mentoring grants from NIH, there is little direct support to offset the substantial time and effort required for mentoring. But there are few, if any, more important responsibilities than mentoring the next generation. In this month’s Mongan Reflections I am pleased to highlight a selected group of mentors and faculty leaders at Mongan recognized for excellence. Among faculty mentors receiving recent special recognitions are Dr. Elyse Park who received the “Mentorship of Women Award” from the Department of Psychiatry; Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford who was awarded the Young Mentor Award from Harvard Medical School; and Dr. Tina Luberto who was selected for the Behavioral Medicine Mentorship Award. Dr. Emily Hyle was named an Anne Klibanski Visiting Scholar Award presented to women faculty clinicians, educators, and researchers who have shown exceptional promise as leaders in their field. Dr. Liza Iezzoni was recently recognized for her leadership in the field of disability research with an appointment as Co-Chair of an Advisory Committee to the NIH Director on Individuals with Disabilities. In addition to these recognized honors, I also would like to highlight the extraordinary work of the leaders of the 2021 COVID Corps Research Internship Program: Dr. Long Nguyen; Dr. Andy Chan; Aswita Tan-McGrory; Dr. Esteban Barreto; and Dr. Erica Warner; and many faculty mentors from the Mongan Institute who will be mentoring this year’s 17 COVID Corps scholars who were selected from a pool of 138 applicants. (see https://www.monganinstitute.org/covid-corps-2021-cohort). This program focused on developing the future pipeline of diverse researchers could not be more in need, nor timelier. Mentoring is not about advancing the goals and interests of the research mentor, and is not about conventional didactic teaching. But instead, mentoring requires generosity and generativity with the goal of authentically connecting with developing scientists to help identify and achieve their passion, interests, and full potential. At the Mongan Institute, prioritizing mentoring that advances the aspirations, skills, and careers of the next generation of researchers is among our greatest callings and responsibilities. “The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” — Steven Spielberg

MGH COVID Corps Biomedical Research Internship Program
| |
The MGH COVID Corps Biomedical Research Internship Program, launched in 2020, was created to offer an opportunity to conduct original investigative research in a multitude of positions and roles suited to the scientific interests of students whose early career training may have been upended by the pandemic. With thought-leading experts in areas such as epidemiology, computational biology, and immunology, prospective COVID Corps scholars have the unique opportunity to be matched with a mentor and learn, grow, and expand their network in one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. MGH is pleased to announce that 17 exceptional interns were selected among 138 applicants to join the 2021 COVID Corps Cohort. Members of this cohort are 100% from groups historically underrepresented in biomedical science, including but not limited to:
- Women or gender diverse individuals of any ethnic or racial group
- Those identifying as Hispanic, Black, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Southeast Asian, or American Indian/Alaska Native; or
- First-generation and low-income or low-income college/graduate students

Aswita Tan-McGrory, MBA, MSPH, along with Juliana Chen, MD, and Kimberly Truong, PhD, were featured in a special episode of Mass General's Charged podcast series titled "Racism Against the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community". They discuss the history of racism against the AAPI community, how the pandemic has fueled it, and why this group has been widely excluded from conversation, data, and policy intended to foster racial equality. According to Stop AAPI Hate, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have faced more than 6,000 hate incidents since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is about a 149% rise since the previous year. The racially motivated incidents ranged from verbal harassment, including hateful rhetoric about the COVID-19 virus, to physical attacks, such as the March 2021 mass shootings in Atlanta, Georgia.
