| FAQ of the Month How do I deal with failure (or even just the fear of failure)?
No one enjoys failing, but (spoiler alert) it happens to everyone! In the Career Center, we meet with people every day -- talented, amazing people -- who have been rejected after final round interviews, turned down for grants, etc. What separates the ones who feel stuck in a rut from those who dust themselves off and try again?
- Ability to reframe the situation ... As our buddy Thomas Edison says, “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Reframing the situation is an exercise in perspective-taking, and it takes practice (and the willingness to fail!).
- ... and put the failure (or fear of failure) in context. Okay, so you failed. Ask yourself: "Will this matter in a year?" (Most of the time it won't, by the way.) Or if it's something you're afraid to try, ask "What's the worst that could happen if I fail?" Does it outweigh the risk of never trying?
