John Truong Offers Kind Reassurance While Recovering Lost Luggage
Heading home after a long work day is usually relaxing...unless you realize you're missing all your vital identification documents.
That was Hawaiian Airline flight attendant Hatsumi Gerber's experience, but luckily Port of Portland police officer John Truong (he/him) was there to assist. Hatsumi nominated John for his exceptional service:
“After landing at PDX and heading to the employee bus stop, I realized that I only had two of my suitcases and my very important crew bag was not with me – I was frantic! I contacted the PDX Communications Center and told them I thought I might have left the bag somewhere at PDX and they sent Officer John Truong to help.
He escorted me back to the arrival gate and by the time we got there, the surveillance footage had been reviewed. Officer Truong informed me that the footage showed I walked out with only two bags, which gave me hope that my third bag would still be on the plane.
He took me to the aircraft and I was able to reunite with my crew bag! I can’t express how relieved I was. He checked the contents and confirmed my passport, crew identification, wallet and everything else was safely in the bag.
Officer Truong was very thorough and assisted me with kindness. I would appreciate it if you could recognize his great work!”
John was honored at the PDX People Customer Service Awards, where we recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary. Mark your calendars for the next event coming up on Tuesday, April 26, from noon to 1 p.m. Missed the last virtual awards ceremony? View the event recording or read about past winners. PDX Gets Loud: This spring, we're excited to reach a new phase in the PDX Next project: preparing the main terminal so we can slide the new roof over top. That said, it might get a little loud. If you're working at PDX from early April through June, you may hear or even feel the construction, particularly in the ticketing and security areas. From earplugs to extra walls, learn more about the steps we're taking to lessen the noise.

Volunteer Appreciation: USO Northwest Center
Did you know that PDX is home to four volunteer programs? This month, we'll highlight each of these areas in honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, celebrated April 17 - 23.
We're kicking off the month of gratitude with the USO at PDX. Located at the south end of baggage claim, the USO Northwest Center provides a warm and comforting place where service members can connect to loved ones via internet or phone, play a video game, catch a movie, have a snack or just put their feet up and relax.
Here are a few fun facts about the USO Northwest Center:
  • It opened at PDX on June 1, 2014.
  • It is supported by 56 active volunteers.
  • In 2021, volunteers provided 5,000+ hours of service.
  • In the last two years, the USO Northwest Center assisted with multiple National Guard vaccination sites, holiday meal distribution and fire fighting efforts.

Meet Four Port of Portland Women Who Promote Healing and Hope
This year, Women's History Month focused on the theme, “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope," a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during the pandemic and a recognition of the thousands of ways women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history. PDX and the Port of Portland are home to many extraordinary women who embody this theme through their unwavering dedication to their work and care for our community. Get to know four of them – Emily Rice (Information Technology), Lani Hill (Portland Airport Fire and Rescue), Cassie Hartless (Port of Portland Police) and Wendy Given (PDX Art Program) – in this Portside article.
Employee Parking Website is a Front Row Spot for Parking Information
Doreen and Marie from the Employee Parking Office (pictured left) are always happy to help, but a digital landing page is often necessary to access forms, apps and information at any time of day. That's why the office recently launched a new webpage, making it simple to find answers to all your parking questions including where to find the office, how to apply for parking, what to do if you've lost your parking pass and much more. It also has links to the shuttle bus app and the employee parking lot map.
U.S. Airport Security Screening to Become More Gender-Neutral
U.S. airport security procedures will become more gender-neutral, with changes to scanners used for screening and the use of an “X” for travelers going through Precheck who do not identify as male or female. Transportation Security Administration officers will also receive new instructions on screening intended to make procedures less invasive. In related news, Alaska Airlines announced new gender-neutral uniform and grooming guidelines for employees, giving workers the freedom to express themselves in an industry that has historically maintained rigid policies.

PDX in Pictures
Since opening in the summer of 2020, the Concourse E extension has come to life with amazing art, beautiful views and fantastic new shopping and dining options. But we hadn’t yet had an opportunity to truly celebrate the new concessions: Starbucks, Blue Star Donuts, Evergreens, Bambuza, Tender Loving Empire, Tillamook, Juliett, Stumptown Coffee, Jamba Juice, Calliope and Your Northwest Travel Mart.
Last Monday, we provided a proper welcome with remarks from several PDX concessionaires and representatives of the Port of Portland, live music by PDX volunteer musician Gerardo Calderon, free samples, giveaways and so much more! Travelers and employees alike took a trip through the concourse to get their event passport stamped at each location, turning it in at the end for a prize.
But, as is no surprise, the biggest hits were two very special guests: Smokey the Llama and Napoleon the Alpaca. Thanks to everyone who put time, energy and so much effort into creating a warm and welcoming event and to all who came out to help celebrate!
