Apply for the Art of Grantsmanship Program
The next session for the Art of Grantsmanship program will begin September 11, 2023. Up to 30 faculty may enroll in the Art of Grantsmanship microcredential for fall 2023. Faculty completing the microcredential by 31 October will earn a $500 stipend. The competition for the small grant is independent of the stipend: faculty do not need to apply for the small grant to complete the microcredential and earn the stipend.
The Canvas course will remain available for participants throughout the year as a resource or reference.
Contact Dr. Alexis Petri with any questions.

The Chairs Forum Development Program
One of CAFE’s goal as a Center is to provide leadership development opportunities for our faculty. The Chair’s Forum Development Program is a yearlong, cohort-based leadership development program for recently appointed department chairs at UMKC. This program aims to provide faculty leaders a valuable opportunity to learn about the qualities of effective leaders, develop a stronger awareness of their leadership skillset, gain a broader institutional perspective of the university and grapple with key issues faced by faculty in positions of leadership. The program is structured into monthly sessions, during which participating faculty engage in interactive workshops, receive personal assessment, hear presentations by campus and other leaders and build their professional networks.

The 2022-2023 Chair’s Forum recently wrapped up a successful year of leadership development on May 5th with a reception in which current participants were recognized.

The Rules of Engagement: Conversations on Community Engaged Scholarship

The Rules of Engagement Faculty Development Sessions

Have a topic related to community-engaged scholarship that you'd like to explore? Have an engagement best practice that you'd like to highlight or a lesson learned alongside a Community Partner that you want to share? CAFE and UMKC's Division of External Relations and Constituent Engagement are looking to identify topics for the fall '23 Rules of Engagement faculty training sessions where UMKC Faculty are invited to gather for casual conversations over lunch to discuss issues related to the best practices of Community Engaged Scholarship.

Peer Observation Program Will Continue

The Peer Observation Pilot program concluded with a productive wrap up meeting on May 18th. Planning for expansion and improvements to the program were topics of discussion, as well as a brief analysis of survey results from the year one participants. Results from the surveys indicated that the first year of Peer Observation was a valuable and meaningful endeavor for both observees and observers.
Faculty who are interested in becoming a trained peer observer or in having a course observed during the 2023-2024 academic year can contact Tara Allen or Molly Mead.  Watch for future communications about joining the program in FAN and through emails from the Provost's office.

Your Voice Has Been Heard

Earlier this year, UMKC was one of many institutions to join the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE), based at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, which administered a survey of job satisfaction to our faculty. In this effort, locally coordinated by CAFE, surveys were sent to 531 faculty members and we had a total response rate of 66.9%. The overall response rate for participating in the Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey by all institutions was 51.4%. Thanks to all of those who took the time to respond to the survey—your voice has been heard!
Later this year, COACHE will send us a comprehensive report of the findings, including comparative results from peers among a large cohort of similar institutions. CAFE has convened a steering committee responsible for assisting CAFE in interpreting and responding to the detailed findings when they arrive.
