All students are invited to the Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Oct. 16, at Stauffer-Flint Hall. A professional photographer will be available between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Resource Center to take portraits of students, faculty and staff. Check out these tips to ensure you're prepared for the Career Fair.

Sign up for the CSIS bootcamp: The application for this year’s CSIS bootcamp is now open! You can find it along with other important details here. The travel dates are from March 14-21. Applications and recommendations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24. The bootcamp will be a five-day program during KU’s spring break in 2026 in Washington, D.C., and Professor of the Practice Patricia Gaston will accompany students. Did you know you can submit work from your summer internship for entry into the Hearst Journalism Awards? Work by students that was published in professional publications is eligible if you get a letter from the editor attesting that the entry is the student’s work. To be considered, see Gerri Berendzen at the Bremner Editing Center, Stauffer-Flint Room 112, or email gberendzen@ku.edu. The contest has entry deadlines throughout the year. Deadline for submitting in the feature writing category is Nov. 4, news and feature photography is Nov. 11, television features is Nov. 18 and sports writing is Dec. 16.

The KU Office of Faculty Affairs is hosting Professor Hyunjin Seo’s inaugural Distinguished Professor Lecture and reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union. Titled “From Digital Literacy to Civic Engagement: University-Community Partnerships for Economic Mobility and Community Capacity Building,” Seo’s lecture will explore frameworks for creating, co-designing and implementing community-engaged projects that expand access to information and strengthen critical thinking skills essential to a healthy democracy. Katy Hamilton, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation’s senior director of workforce and career development, will also speak at the event, highlighting the foundation’s community-focused initiatives, including its collaborations with Seo. Lecturer Eric Thomas wrote an essay for “Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains” about the television program, “Somebody Somewhere” published in the summer 2025 issue. The writing was included in “Echoes of Oz: Recent Filmmaking in Kansas and the Great Plains,” edited by Thomas Prasch.
University Daily Kansan adviser Nick Jungman and Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon co-hosted “Book Nerd trivia,” part of the Lawrence Public Library’s Booktoberfest events, at Maceli’s on Oct. 7.
Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman and master’s student Olga Morales published their study “‘Real effort’ and ‘real skill’: Editors emphasize their contributions in a changing field” in Journalism Practice.
Research by Assistant Professor Vaibhav Diwanji, Professor Yvonnes Chen and Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot was featured last week at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Region IV-West conference at Washington University in St. Louis. The study queried first-generation advertising students, exploring modalities and content to optimize inclusive digital tools. The results inspired a session discussing applications and implications for student affairs work in areas of retention and well-being.

Hannah Wise and Ian Cummings have been promoted to managing editors of the Kansas City Star. Cummings, previously the assistant managing editor for breaking news and accountability, has been with the paper for 10 years. Wise, with The Star since 2021, has most recently served as the assistant managing editor for engagement and experimentation. Read the full news release.
Dayton Hammes is assistant athletic director/social media strategy and content for Illinois State Athletics.

Tara Bryant died Sept. 26 at age 32. Bryant earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications in 2015. As an undergraduate, she worked for the University Daily Kansan and landed a Dow Jones News Fund internship. Read her obituary here.
