It's been a busy summer at the Center with many guests coming and going for silent retreats, All Day Sittings and Quiet Weeks. Even so there is a stillness that pervades all. Soft breezes, sweet singing of crickets and grasshoppers and the simple beauty of the land inspire quietude and give space for just sitting and looking.

In September, as we move into fall, there are two silent retreats planned and, between them, two Quiet Weeks. More information information is given below...

August 31-September 7, Seven Day Silent Retreat with Sandra Gonzalez and Susan Schepp

Sandra and Susan will lead this upcoming retreat and you can click here for more information. Susan asks, "Is it possible to listen not just with the ears but with the whole body? Meaning being aware of all that is going on... In this open listening between the speaker and the listener, is it possible to experience the words in a different way as though the words are happening but there is no one listening? When we find ourselves thinking, analyzing, comparing, judging, when we are identifying with these thought patterns, feelings of being separate arise and we no longer feel part of the whole experience even though we are."

In that vein in a recent article titled, Right Action, Sandra says, "Living moment to moment is not living from the dream of my LIFE. It is seeing what arises moment to moment for what it is: stories as stories, habits as habits, facts as facts. No confusion. Then there is just being, responding to whatever this moment calls for. Our lives become simpler, with humility and compassion toward our self and others. With an open, flexible mind that isn’t fixed in anything, but ready."

Space remains in this retreat for both full and part-time attendance. Single and shared rooms are available.

3 Quiet Weeks, September 8-20

Quiet Weeks offer the opportunity to design your own retreat–with options for timed and open sitting, group dialogues, and individual meetings with teachers in residence. You may attend as many days as you like, and you may combine two retreats with the Quiet Weeks to create a month long retreat.

Quiet Week participants are guaranteed a private room during Quiet Weeks.

Seven Day Silent Retreat with Richard Witteman

Richard explored the nature of thought in a recent article. He says this about it,

"...But thought is powerful.

To be unconscious of imagination’s activity is to be taken for a wild ride. To be hard and judgmental to thought’s presence is to create an enemy — and a new story of conflict and suffering.

In the grace of loving spaciousness, it is possible to explore the moment to moment nature of this energy. With awareness and patience, the movement of imagination can become transparent, its influence discerned. We can become wise about the ways of thought, wise about its quicksilver power."

Center Closed Sept 29-Oct 7

Please do not plan to visit at this time. Staff will be taking a well earned break. We'll be welcoming guests and volunteers again on October 8 as we prepare for the October 11-15 retreat with Stew Glick.

Picnic Memories

The annual picnic at the Center in August has been a welcome addition to the calendar. Once again, this year, wonderful food, friends, music, dancing and poetry all made for great fun.
