Spring Registration Opens Soon!
Colorful trees on campus
Hi there,
It's October, and students' thoughts turn to...the courselist! Winter registration is open, and spring semester registration is on the horizon.
Global Initiatives is excited to offer our first winter MiamiConnects courses: fully collaborative online workshops that allow you to engage with different kinds of communities, providing a deep dive into another culture. All MiamiConnects workshops meet the same Global Perspectives Miami Plan requirements as our travel workshops abroad.
For spring, consider IDS 253, Voices Intergroup Dialogue or IDS 151, Diversity Seminar. In both of these courses, students will gain valuable skills in cross-cultural communication and team-building. Learn more at MiamiOH.edu/Voices.

In the Arena

Theodore Roosevelt’s famous speech talked about how “the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena.” The credit this semester goes to the students who are making the Study, Engage, Travel experience their own in the time of COVID-19. By coming to MUDEC, they are “in the arena” of the education abroad experience, and they were literally in the arena when they visited Trier for a Discovery Tour.
Starting at the Trier Roman Amphitheatre, students were directly in the arena of the former capital of the Western Roman Empire. Afterwards, they walked through 2000 years of history with visits to the Kaiserthermen Trier, Konstantin-Basilika, two neighboring cathedrals, and the magnificent Porta Nigra. A one-hour drive to go 2000 years back in history: a perfect snapshot of the value of the MUDEC experience.
If you'd like to study, engage, and travel at MUDEC, Spring MUDEC applications are due October 30. Visit MiamiOH.edu/MUDEC to learn more.

Staff Spotlight
Kevin Fitzgerald

Did you know these fun facts about Kevin Fitzgerald?

In this month's Staff Spotlight, meet Kevin Fitzgerald, Study Abroad Advisor in Education Abroad. Kevin is excited to be a part of launching two new programs, Co-Sponsored and MiamiConnects. These innovative approaches to international education are keeping Miami at the forefront of an important part of higher education and Miami's role in educating the whole student.
  • After college, I spent the next 5 years living and working in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cincinnati focusing on social justice, migrant rights, and access to clean and healthy food for all.
  • I helped run an urban farm on reclaimed land in a food desert. From a tiny seed, to a bountiful harvest. It was a great learning experience that I carry to my backyard garden today. My family and I enjoy fresh food all summer and canned and frozen garden bounty in the winter.
  • Beyond my role in GLI, I am actively working on my dissertation for a PhD in Educational Leadership at Miami. It has been an educational adventure in all things international education.
