Hey Jumbos!
Have you been thinking about how you might get involved in social activities at Tufts? If so, you're in luck because this week we are introducing you to the Office for Campus Life (OCL).
The OCL team advises more than 400 Tufts Community Union (TCU)-recognized, student-run organizations, supporting the growth and development of students in the areas of leadership and self-governance, and assists students in planning and coordinating a broad range of social, cultural, and educational programs.

|
There's a lot to choose from so where do you start? We've got you! Here are a few ideas…
|
- Starting in late August, explore the JumboLife website where student organizations are listed and post updates.
- Follow social media accounts; many student organizations post events, tryouts, photos, and more.
- Attend the Student Organization Fair on Monday, September 7, on Fletcher Field, Medford/Somerville campus.
-
Go to events hosted by student organizations you're interested in; many host events that are open to all.
- Read your Jumbo Digest! On Sundays during the academic year, you'll receive an email from Student Life with a convenient at-a-glance look of what's coming up for the week ahead.
-
Consult with the OCL team; they're a great resource to answer questions and give some guidance on getting connected through social activities.

Did you know that Tufts owns a property in Woodstock, New Hampshire, with easy access to White Mountain National Forest and surrounding recreation areas? It's called the Loj (pronounced LOHge). With guidance from the OCL team, the property is managed by Tufts Mountain Club (TMC), one of the oldest and largest clubs on campus. TMC offers diverse trip opportunities to the Loj for all students, free gear rentals, transportation options, skill-building clinics, and more.

|
OCL is located in the Mayer Campus Center (next to the bookstore). No doubt you will spend some time in this central hub on campus that includes the following:
|
|
|
|
-
popular dining options: Hotung Café, Commons Marketplace, and Pax et Lox Kosher Deli;
- the student-run Sink Coffeeshop;
- Tufts information booth;
- an outdoor patio; and
- lounge areas where students kick back and relax, enjoy board games, or ping pong.
|
|
|
|
The Campus Center is also where student organizations meet and where they and many on- and off-campus partners host pop-up events like an Acai Bowl Bar, Smoothie Day, and free pie on Pi Day; displays by local clothing and jewelry vendors; student organization fundraisers (e.g., baked goods, flowers, and bubble tea sales); and takeover/tabling events hosted by the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion (DSDI), Career Center, Alumni Engagement, or the Center for Awareness, Resources, and Education (CARE).
OCL team members welcome students to come by their offices next to the Campus Center's information booth, but you'll also see them walking around—be sure to say hello and introduce yourselves!

SMFA-Based Student Organizations |
Recognized by TCU, SMFA Student Government Association (SGA) is the student-led government body that works with Student Life at SMFA to program events, support SMFA-based student organizations, and advocate for fellow students at the Boston SMFA campus. While SMFA-based clubs are organized by SMFA students, all students are welcome.
|
OCL Campus Partner: Tufts Recreation |
In addition to getting involved in student organizations, Jumbos who like to play sports, compete, or be active with friends can participate in the following:
Club sports are student-run and funded through the TCU Senate with scheduling support from Tufts Recreation. There are 33 club sports; some have tryouts (e.g., soccer, basketball) based on the maximum players allowed on their rosters. Club sports teams practice regularly and compete against other colleges and universities.
Intramural sports range from volleyball and basketball to cornhole and pickleball, where Tufts students compete and play against other Tufts students. No experience is needed and there are no tryouts, but spaces are limited. Registration opens at the start of the fall and spring semesters.
All students have access to the Tisch Sports and Fitness Center with their Tufts ID to use the Center's weights, treadmills, basketball courts, squash courts, and pool. There are lockers, a sauna, and depending on the season and team usage, access to the indoor track and tennis courts.
Fitness classes are taught by certified instructors and available at $10 a class or as a mini course. Physical Education classes are open to undergraduate students. These are popular, for-credit electives taught by Tufts athletic coaches and certified Pilates and yoga instructors.
Students can email ClubSports@tufts.edu or IMSports@tufts.edu to learn more about those specific programs. If you have general inquiries about Tufts Recreation, contact recreation@tufts.edu.
