We once again ended last academic year on a high note. Last June, FACES programs across California celebrated the high school graduations and accomplishments of their students, including programs in San Diego, San Francisco, East Oakland, Hayward and Alameda. We honor those students and wish them well as they begin the next phase of their educational journeys.

This summer has been a very busy and productive time for the FACES Coalition team. Our summer programs - the FACES Summer Medical Academy, the Global Health Youth Summit (GHYS) and the Behavioral Health Undergraduate Summit - again provided innovative and impactful opportunities for career exposure and development.  I invite you to read more about the programs in the sections below.
And finally, I am excited to share that the 2017-18 academic year will bring additional growth for the FACES Coalition.  This Fall will mark the formal launch of two new national FACES programs  - one in Denver, Colorado and the other in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  These programs represent opportunities for continued expansion and development for our Coalition and an opportunity to serve youth across the nation!  I thank all of you for your support over the years, and I look forward to sharing further developments of our efforts in the coming months.

Tomás Magaña, MD, MA, FAAP
Founding Director, FACES for the Future
In June 2017, twenty FACES for the Future students, each representing a FACES program from across California, traveled to Washington DC to participate in the second year of the Global Health Youth Summit (GHYS).
This extraordinary Summit was developed and implemented in partnership and collaboration with the Global Health Fellows Program-II (GHFP-II), a fellow project of the Public Health Institute. The GHYS was created with the intention to inspire FACES students to pursue careers in global health, thereby helping to build the next generation of diverse global health professionals.
The FACES for the Future Coalition's Summer Medical Academy (FSMA) was created to expose high school students to the field of medicine, nursing, and allied professions. This year’s Academy was a huge success. In partnership with Samuel Merritt University, FACES for the Future Coalition hosted 45 scholars from July 10-21, 2017 to provide a unique lens for high schoolers to view the current health care field.
This summer, due to the success of the inaugural summit in 2016, we held our second year of the Behavioral Health Undergraduate Summit (BHUS). In partnership with Samuel Merritt University and Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services, the FACES Coalition offered this unique program to 30 college students from all over the Bay Area from July 10 – 21, 2017, hosted at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA.
Angelica Nuño, FACES Oakland Class of 2005, has been hired as Samuel Merritt University's new Student Health Coordinator. Angelica comes to SMU from Planned Parenthood and received her Bachelor of Science in Human Development from the University of California, Davis. She has a passion for serving underserved communities through health promotion. In past years, Angelica worked as a Unit Assistant at St. Rose Hospital Emergency Department in Hayward, CA. (home of the FACES Hayward program), and as a Reproductive Health Specialist at Planned Parenthood. Congratulations Angelica!
The FACES San Diego program, with Rady Children's Hospital for Healthier Communities, hosted their 4th Summer Medical Academy (SMA) this summer. This unique and exciting two-week program, adopted from the FACES for the Future Coalition’s Summer Medical Academy, also seeks to inspire high school students interested in medicine to explore careers in healthcare and become caring and insightful professionals in a complex and rapidly changing world.
