Announcing Susan Kearney, MD, new program medical director
Children’s Minnesota is pleased to announce Dr. Susan Kearney as the new medical director of the cancer and blood disorders program. Dr. Kearney joined the Children’s Minnesota team in 2010 and has been an amazing addition ever since.

Dr. Kearney was born in Canada and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She received her Medical Doctorate degree from the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. She then moved to Boston for her pediatric residency and her pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
She's excited for the future of the cancer and blood disorders program at Children's Minnesota. Some things you can anticipate for 2022:
  • FACT accreditation
  • Raising awareness of our adult and young adolescent cancer program (more below)
  • Fertility preservation options
  • Hospitalist program
  • And more!
Dr. Yoav Messinger, who has acted as medical director of the cancer and blood disorders program since 2016, is passing the baton to Dr. Kearney and will continue to practice medicine at Children’s Minnesota.

Listen to our Talking Pediatrics episode where we have the unique experience of not only talking with two of our experts in pediatric oncology, Dr. Julie Chu (above right) and Trinayani Freeberg and also Isadora (above left), an 18-year-old who has been a patient in the AYA cancer program for the last three years.
Today Isadora bravely shares her story with us, as we have the opportunity to hear from one of our amazing patients and her healthcare team what it's like to be an adolescent and young adult cancer patient and learn from Isadora ways that we can all improve our care for kids by helping them be at the center of their own stories.

This program specializes in evaluating adolescent and young adult women who experience heavy bleeding with their periods. The program also works closely with patients, and their healthcare providers, who have known bleeding or clotting disorders, require menstrual management in the setting of prior venous thromboembolism or are at risk for a clotting disorder due to family history, or heavy bleeding to anticipate and prepare these patients for the onset of menses.
