Trailblazers Highlight Founders Day Event
Seven African Americans, who were trailblazers at Grand Valley, led a Founders Day event for students. “Paving the Way for Future Generations” was held on October 24 at the Alumni House on the Allendale Campus. The trailblazers included Cheryl Franks, representing her father, Dr. Julius Franks, the only African American among our university founders; Curtis Joseph Jones, first African American male professor; Julianne Vanden Wyngaard, first African American female professor; James Moore, first African American male student to enroll at Grand Valley in 1963; Betty Burton Groce, first African American woman to serve on the Grand Valley Foundation board; Danny Poole, first African American student athlete to earn a scholarship; and Ron Gates, first African American to portray the Great Laker.

Seeing the Future
 "I’m proud to be a female in STEM.” - Autumn Goulet '10
As a process development chemist for Gentex Corporation in Zeeland, Autumn Goulet, ’10, conducts product research and development. She assists Gentex in helping the automotive industry transition from analog to digital displays. Goulet feels her time on GVSU's Student Senate trained her to tackle problems with a team and prepared her for the work she does today.

Alumni in 10 Interview: Andrew Hereza '17 
Andrew Hereza, '17, earned his bachelor's of science with a double major in political science and public & nonprofit administration degree while at Grand Valley. He now works as a director of Constituent Relations for the Michigan State Senate. His fondest memories of Grand Valley include becoming elected as a student senator and being a part of his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta. Read on to learn more about Andrew's Laker Effect!

Grand Valley's Art Gallery has launched a new online digital library that provides a comprehensive database of the life and works of late artist Mathias J. Alten. The university currently owns the largest single public collection of Alten's work. The Mathias J. Alten Online Digital Library allows users to seamlessly browse through Alten’s life and work on computers and mobile devices.

GVSU Receives Fourth Consecutive Gold Status From Veterans Group
Grand Valley has been recognized for the fourth year in a row as a "Gold Level" veteran-friendly institution by the Michigan Veteran Affairs Agency. The MVAA's veteran-friendly school program recognizes academic institutions of higher learning that are committed to supporting the needs of student veterans and dependents. Three levels, including gold, silver, and bronze, are awarded by the organization.

GVSU Women's Cross Country Captures Sixth National Title
The Grand Valley women's cross country team captured its sixth NCAA National Title with a dominant performance in the 6K race after they scored 41 points, while Sarah Berger became the third GVSU athlete in program history to win a NCAA Cross Country National Title on December 1 in Pittsburgh. The Lakers won the meet by 42 points.

The Grand Valley men's cross country team captured its first NCAA National Title after they scored 89 points during the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships 10K race on December 1.

The No. 1 Grand Valley Lakers fell, 1-0, in the 2018 NCAA National Championship to the Bridgeport Purple Knights on December 1 at Highmark Stadium. This season, these Lakers made strides towards keeping the GVSU Lakers a national powerhouse in the women's soccer world.
