Suggested by Angela Hamilton, Coordinator of Student-Operated Services
We've been talking about our concern with “cancel culture” in Student Activities and Leadership Programs for a few years so the title stood out to me... I recommend this book because it is an exploration, an inquiry. It feels authentic when the author apologizes for previous writings and is committed to continued learning. I appreciate reading what someone is learning as a process, not just another "expert's" treatise. adrienne maree brown emphasizes the need for clear definitions, to avoid hyperbole and to be intentional with our words. I feel like the book is also a call to deeply transform ourselves and how we relate to each other as we learn our way into and through a world, movements, and organizations rooted in transformative justice.

Building a Routine that Contributes to Success“As you look forward into this new year of 2021, what do you hope for? The past year has thrown many obstacles in our paths and disrupted most of our routines in one way or another. But, routines are important. They help provide stability in unstable times. A routine can be something to lean on when life gets hectic. If you’re looking for an exact schedule for how your days should look…you may want to look elsewhere. This article is about the value of having a routine that connects to your definition of success — but everyone’s definitions are different, so everyone’s routines will look different.”

As part of last week's Presidential Inauguration events, actor Lin-Manuel Miranda recited Seamus Heaney's poem, "The Cure of Troy." During the "Celebrating America" television event, Master of Ceremonies Tom Hanks noted that President Biden has frequently quoted this poem for its particular relevance, inspiring him to declare that this is our moment to make hope and history rhyme. I hope you, too, have found your own hope and inspiration this week.
