Applications are open for the second annual Iles Award for Research in Editing, sponsored by the Bremner Editing Center. This award of $1,000 is intended to support research pertaining to the teaching or practice of editing written language. Faculty, graduate students, independent scholars and corporate/industry researchers are welcome to apply for the award; projects may involve editing of any professional written content. Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2025. Full eligibility and application information is available here.
Applications open for Robert Hemenway Public Service Award: Students applying for the award must have junior status this semester, enrolled a full time KU undergraduate student during the 2025-2026 academic year and complete an application and submit a 250-word essay. Applications and essays must be submitted before 4 p.m. on April 18. The award recipient will receive $1,250 in the fall of 2025. Submit your application to bballard@ku.edu.

KU PRSSA to recognize PR Star on April 9: KU PRSSA will honor JMC alum Sara Beane, owner of Beanes-Talk Media, with its first PR Star award Wednesday, April 9 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Clarkson Gallery. In addition to PRSSA members, KU students interested in public relations are welcome to attend. Pizza and beverages will be provided. Beane will share her experience in the PR field with the group.

JMC 330 hosts pair of guest speakers: Retired sports journalist and former Pulitzer Prize winner Mike McKenzie and Cydney Glaze, senior director of football communications and administration for the Kansas City Chiefs visited the class last week.

State entries will be submitted to judges by April 12, with results due to KSPA by April 18. To participate, review the contest schedule and select your preferred judging categories, keeping in mind the quick turnaround for state entries. Professor of the Practice Patricia Gaston is participating in an upcoming Wellness in our Democracy series, “Discernment in Moments of Abrupt Shifts,” on Thursday, April 17 from 5:30-7 p.m. Register for the event here.
Professor Hyunjin Seo and Associate Professor Hong Vu participated in a panel discussion on digital technologies and activism in East Asia. The panel is part of the Global Asia in the Digital Age Symposium, held at KU from April 4 - 5. This two-day symposium examined the transformative role of digital technologies across various domains through the analytical lens of Global Asia. Specifically, the discussions focused on the use of digital tools such as AI, network analysis and 3D printing in higher education, creative fields, and activism in China, South Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
JMC School faculty and students head to conference: Faculty Lecturer Gerri Berendzen and Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon, along with students Courtney Lane, Erik Overgaard and Emily Harter, attended the annual conference of ACES: The Society for Editing in Salt Lake City. Berendzen demonstrated fact-checking tools live during her session, and McLendon presented a session on real rules vs. grammar myths. McLendon is president of the ACES Education Fund, which raised several thousand dollars for scholarships through a silent auction and spelling bee at the conference. All three students are editors on the University Daily Kansan.
