Here's your news for August from on and off campus.

Carleton's Arboretum is beautiful at any time of year but it is especially glorious during the long days of summer. Paths in the Upper or Lower Arb provide opportunities for exercise, reflection, and restoration (for the land and for us). Take a jaunt this time of year and you will find amazing wildflowers including Yellow Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata), New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), and Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya).

Alumni are blazing their own paths as well. Clara Lehmann ’04 and Jonathan Lacocque ’04 premiered their second feature documentary, O Pioneer, at the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival, Shaun Kadlec ’00 and Grace Zahrah ’14 won a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award for their film, Possible Selves: Overcoming the Odds in Foster Care, and Hannah Aylward Burcaw ’19 was featured alongside her husband, Shane Burcaw, in a Mpls.St.Paul Magazine piece.

Carleton named fifth-highest producer of Peace Corps volunteers among small colleges

The Peace Corps announced its rankings of colleges and universities that produced the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers in 2025. Carleton is proud to be recognized as the fifth-highest producer of volunteers this year among small colleges, which includes institutions with fewer than 5,000 undergraduates.

Last year, Carleton was named the second-highest small college producer of Peace Corps volunteers since the agency was established in 1961. With 506 total volunteers over the decades, Carleton currently has seven alumni serving in six countries around the world: Cambodia, Kenya, Kosovo, Morocco, Namibia, and Paraguay. Carleton forges path for students interested in religious leadership

Rev. Schuyler Vogel ’07, college chaplain, recently received a grant to allow Carleton to fund a Religious Leadership Fellows Program in the upcoming 2025–26 academic year. With this funding, a cohort of eight rising juniors and seniors spanning a variety of faith traditions will be equipped with the resources they need to explore futures in religious leadership. Alumni Business Fellowship Program

Applications are due by September 15 for Carleton’s Lofgren Alumni Business Fellowship Program, which helps alumni in established business careers broaden their professional path by pursuing educational opportunities. Typically used for full-time study or executive M.B.A. programs for mid-career Carls, the fellowships cover all or a portion of tuition fees and related costs for up to two years of study. Carleton Entrepreneur Confab*

Join us on campus for two days of working sessions, networking, and community building on Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25. Alums have asked for a gathering for entrepreneurial Carls in order to promote networking and tap into the wealth of alumni talent and knowledge. This fall, the Center for Leadership in Innovation and Change (CLIC) is pleased to host the 2025 Carleton Entrepreneur Confab! Learn more and register.

“I work overnights at the Mankato Mayo Clinic. I took today’s exam right after finishing last night’s shift”

Keenan Hartert ’13 is a biology professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Inspired to teach after Carleton, he noticed that despite their best efforts, some of his students were not meeting their goals. A cancer bioinformatics researcher, Hartert began collecting data on his students with the aim of uncovering factors predictive of success and failure. One factor stood out in particular: the number of hours they were working.

Join Keenan as he describes his journey from Hulings Hall to MSU and how he is repurposing his research training to explore the link between too much work and failing grades.
