Welcome from the Director

| Greetings!
This year has brought numerous challenges, not only nationwide but also on our campus. Nevertheless, we have been working diligently to present exciting lectures and events, and we are thrilled to connect with all of you.
This newsletter is packed with information. First, you’ll find snapshots of our past events this term, including two fascinating lectures by leading scholars in Law and Anthropology and a sold-out K-Pop concert at the Lincoln Performance Hall. We also highlight what’s ahead in the winter and spring terms, featuring an array of engaging topics spanning Social Work, Literature, Piano and Trombone Performance, Contemporary Art, Sociology, and Anthropology. We strongly encourage you to mark your calendars and share this newsletter with your students and networks so our Asian Studies community can fully benefit from these enriching programs.
Second, we are delighted to introduce Dr. Evaon Wong, the new Dean of the School of Social Work at PSU. Some of you may already have met Dr. Wong, who has brought tremendous energy and enthusiasm to our community. She will be delivering a talk titled “Serving the Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities: Opportunities and Challenges” on January 23, 2025, and we eagerly anticipate learning more about her work. Additionally, we welcome Fara Mendy, our new Outreach and Program Coordinator at IAS. With his enthusiasm and dedication, I am confident this year’s initiatives at IAS will be a great success.
Lastly, but by no means least, it is my pleasure to highlight the incredible work and contributions of our affiliate faculty members.
I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and stay connected with us on Instagram and Facebook. If you have any suggestions or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at hyeyoung@pdx.edu.

Spotlight on IAS Faculty Affiliates
We would like to feature a faculty and staff member in this newsletter:
Dr. Evaon Wong - Dean of the School of Social Work at Portland State University
&
Fara Mendy, M.Ed - IAS Outreach and Program Coordinator
| Dr. Evaon Wong
Dean of the School of Social Work
Dr. Evaon Wong is the Dean of the School of Social Work (SSW) at Portland State University (PSU). She is a well-recognized advocate and researcher for minority and low-income breast cancer patients, especially the Asian immigrant population. Her research interest is on cancer survivorship and quality of life issues confronting Chinese immigrant breast cancer patients. She published and presented numerous papers at national and international conferences relating to breast cancer and psychosocial issues.
Since Dr. Wong started her new role as the Dean of SSW at PSU, she feels that it has been great even though we are facing some budget challenges. Social Work is in high demand and behavioral health is one of the priorities in terms of state funding. She hopes that social work can be a discipline that many BIPOC and AAPI students will consider and be able to serve the AAPI communities in Portland and Oregon.
Dr. Wong will be giving a talk at IAS, titled as “Serving the Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities, Opportunities and Challenges.” We look forward to learning more about her work on January 23, 2025!
