Dear Student,
I am sad to share the news that Carmen Lowe, Dean of Academic Advising and Undergraduate Studies for the School of Arts and Sciences, has decided to step down from her role and leave Tufts University after more than 25 years of dedicated service to the University. Dean Lowe will be taking some time to focus on personal projects and the next steps in her career, and my colleagues and I in the A&S Deans’ Office want to recognize and thank her for her many contributions to our school.
In her role as Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dean Lowe has led academic support and enrichment programs for undergraduate students and our team of Associate Deans of Undergraduate Advising (the “Alpha Deans”) as well as the staff advisors in Scholar Development and Pre-Health Advising. She has also served as an important contributing member of several academic committees, led the complex, multi-year university-wide credit conversion project, launched the Bridge to Liberal Arts Success at Tufts (BLAST) program, and participated in many, many matriculation and commencement ceremonies and events to celebrate our students. Before becoming a dean, she was the longtime Director of the Academic Resource Center and also taught numerous courses in American Studies, Expository Writing in the English Department, and the Writing Fellows Seminar in the Experimental College. And before her time as an instructor and staff member, Dean Lowe first came to Tufts for graduate studies, earning both her MA and PhD in English. She has truly been a part of the fiber of the University!
Dean Lowe has always been fully dedicated to helping students and has a personal devotion to making education accessible to all. As an undergraduate at Grand Valley State University, she herself was a “first-gen” student and this experience has shaped who she is as a leader in higher education. As a dean, she was charged with upholding and interpreting educational policies and serving, for example, as decision-maker for student appeals related to academic records and academic standing, and she has always done this with great fairness and compassion.
Her last day at Tufts will be June 30. Please join us in thanking Dean Lowe and wishing her all the best on her next chapter.
We will share more information later this summer regarding plans to fill the vacancy created by her departure.
Warm regards,
Nimah Mazaheri
Dean of Academic Affairs, School of Arts and Sciences
Professor of Political Science
