Call for Applications – Dean’s Research Awards
The Dean's Research Awards (DRAs) support SMFA students working on extraordinary artistic projects whose costs exceed the norm. Students may apply to cover any costs related to producing new work, including research, materials, travel, and any other aspect of their projects. Awards may be used to fund any projects that are currently under way or that have been completed or will be completed by the end of the present academic year. Current students can apply for any amount of funding up to $500.
Students are eligible to receive a Dean’s Research Award no more than once every three semesters. Therefore, if you have won a Dean's Research Award during the Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 rounds, you are not eligible for an award during the present round.
Recipients of the Dean’s Research Award must submit a report on the progress they have made on their proposed projects by May 1st, 2022. Progress reports should be submitted to Janet Sartor.
Applications for Dean’s Research Awards must include:
- Your name, program, if you have received a research award previously, and expected year of graduation.
- A project description, not exceeding 500 words. You may wish to discuss specific goals you have for the project and how the project fits with your ongoing artistic practice.
- The amount of funding requested, with an itemized budget showing how the money would be or was spent. (Please make clear that you have researched the cost of the items you will be using.)
- Three to five sample images of your work submitted as a single PDF and/or a film reel/ sound piece that is no longer than 5 minutes, submitted as a single MP4 or hyperlink to a website.
Successful applications will:
- Provide a coherent, compelling, well-written description of the project to be funded;
- Include images/videos of work that display obvious signs of promise/progress;
- Offer a clear justification for the amount of funding being requested, including evidence of pricing out supplies, travel, and other necessities;
- Make clear that the applicant has read these instructions carefully.
All other things being equal, preference will be given to students closest to the end of their academic programs who have not received a DRA before.
Applications for the present round of awards are due by 11:59 pm on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 21ST, 2021. Please email a SINGLE PDF to Janet.Sartor@tufts.edu that includes:
- your project description
- the amount of funding requested, with an itemized budget specifying the cost of each item
- five sample images of your work and/or a link to a video file(s).
Award winners will be informed the WEEK OF DECEMBER 6, 2021.
