You may have read about a change in how we refer to our fundraising efforts recently. We made the change because we believe "philanthropy" better reflects the breadth of the work we do and gets to the heart, spirit, and generosity of those who support us! This philanthropic spirit at Warm Hearth Village distinguishes our community from so many others. Lifting up seniors in need has been a hallmark of this special place where nearly 600 residents call home. It was one of the defining values of our founders. Using their vision, we will continue to work toward securing critical support that helps strengthen our community by helping our neighbors and employees, funding innovative programming and initiatives, and improving our stunning campus.

During this season of gratitude and giving, I hope you will consider supporting our Neighbors In Need Fund. Many residents in our Village contribute their time and talents to make this community an exceptional place to live but need financial support to pay for basic needs like food, toiletries and healthcare costs. Please help us continue the tradition of supporting our residents in need of financial support. EVERY gift, regardless of the amount, is an investment in the vision of our founders, an investment in an unparalleled resource in the New River Valley and for many, an investment in their home.

ROCK STAR FITNESS MEMBER

Congratulations to Roland Byrd for receiving the Rock Star Fitness Member Award!

Roland’s continued commitment to health and fun is evident on a daily basis. Roland can often be found on the Pickleball court twice a week or in the gym working out where he can still do five pull-ups! With Roland's vision and enthusiasm, he was the driving force behind our new Pickleball court. That energy continues to lead to new opportunities such as the new croquet & bocce ball group.

Roland, we celebrate you and all you do to better yourself and those around you. Congratulations and keep on rollin' Roland.

MARCHING VIRGINIANS PERFORMANCE

Kroontje Health Care Center - 1000 Litton Lane, Blacksburg

Wear your orange and maroon and see the Marching Virginians perform select pieces from their half-time show in the field across from the Kroontje Health Care Center. Hokie spirit is required to attend this fun event. Feel free to bring a lawn chair.

POST-STROKE APHASIA CARE

The after-effects of a stroke sometimes damage the left side of the brain, known as "the communication center," which controls our ability to speak and understand language. When a stroke impacts the communication center, aphasia may occur. Aphasia is a condition in which an individual's abilities to read, speak or write are impaired due to damage or injury to the brain.

It is critical to involve a speech-language pathologist (SLP) as part of your or your loved one's post-stroke recovery to help regain as much of the affected communication abilities as possible.

No matter the situation, recovery from a stroke requires patience, perseverance and understanding. Warm Hearth at Home offers highly trained SLP professionals who are here to help with aphasia and other after-effects of a stroke. Call Warm Hearth at Home at (540) 443-3428 to learn more.

2ND ANNUAL TRICK OR TREAT TRAIL

All had a spooktacular time at the 2nd Annual Trick or Treat Trail! We are so grateful to the Warm Hearth residents, VCOM and Virginia Tech students and our corporate partner, Food Lion North Franklin Street Christiansburg, VA who came to make this event a huge success. Special thanks to Lauren Hand and Humana for sponsoring our hay ride and to all of our visitors who came out and brought paper products to fill our pantry for the seniors in need in our community! PREPARING FOR TAX SEASON: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

They will discuss recent tax changes and provide a general market update. TIPS FOR HEALTHY HOLIDAY EATING

The holidays are coming and the gift no one wants are those extra pounds associated with holiday eating. Check out these healthy holiday eating tips from Warm Hearth dietitian Andrea Fulp.

Don’t neglect your exercise! Try to keep up with (or start!) an exercise routine. Shoot for small increases if you are starting fresh. Shoot for 20-30 minutes of movement daily and choose activities you ENJOY doing!
Give in to the treats. It’s OK to let yourself splurge during these times. Try to have small servings of your favorite desserts and listen to your fullness cues. If you are full, save your treat for later or another day. You may try to make a healthier choice somewhere else in the day to meet your nutrition needs. Have the treat, enjoy it, and move on. Avoid putting too much pressure or emphasis on the dessert or treat – no guilt or shame is needed.
Emphasize fruits & vegetables. Continue to try to utilize those fruits and vegetables for snacks or sides. Try a new holiday side with a vegetable or fruit to add color to your plates.
Honor your hunger. Frequently, we feel rude for turning down a food offering. Practice politely saying “no” and honoring your hunger/fullness cues.
Eat mindfully, not mindlessly. Try to focus on what and when you are eating. Are you snagging from the candy bowl just because, or do you really want that treat? Using smaller bowls and plates can help to focus on the foods on your plate and help avoid the guilt of not making the Clean Plate Award. Savor the appearance, smell, and textures of the foods you eat.
