Faculty, staff and constituents gathered to celebrate Ann M. Brill’s 21-year tenure as dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications on Oct. 21. Brill will continue to inspire and teach our students as a member of the faculty.

University of Kansas Director of Athletics and JMC School alumnus Travis Goff visited JMC 330 (Sports Media in the 21st Century) last Thursday. Goff discussed the current state of college athletics, NIL, revenue sharing, KU Football's London game in 2026 and much more in a wide-ranging question-and-answer session.

Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot will give her dissertation defense on Friday, Oct. 31, at 9 a.m. Hendershot’s presentation topic is “Ad astra per aspera: First-generation college graduates' use of digital and social media for career growth and financial literacy.” The Zoom meeting information is available here.
Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman moderated an "AI and Scholarly Publishing" panel on Oct. 21 for the Association for Journalism and Mass Communication, in her role as chair of the AEJMC Elected Standing Committee on Publications.

Shared press distress is the description of Kansas journalists that Stephen Wolgast, Knight Chair of Audience and Community Engagement in News, and Nick Mathews, assistant professor of journalism at the University of Missouri, came up with to describe newsroom reactions to police confiscating computers and notes from the Marion County Record in 2023. Their paper describing it, “‘Shared Press Distress’ and the Police Raid on a Newspaper,” was published last week in the Journal of Communication Inquiry. It’s based on interviews with 19 reporters, editors, and publishers in Kansas. Read the full paper.
Nominate a faculty member for the 2026 University Scholarly Achievement Award: This $10,000 award recognizes a significant scholarly or research contribution, creative work (an exhibition, performance, composition, article or book, or major collaborative project) or a series of closely related contributions. This award covers all fields of scholarship represented at the University of Kansas. The award recognizes up to four mid-career faculty members each year. The KU Office of Faculty Affairs is hosting Professor Hyunjin Seo’s inaugural Distinguished Professor Lecture and reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union. Titled “From Digital Literacy to Civic Engagement: University-Community Partnerships for Economic Mobility and Community Capacity Building,” Seo’s lecture will explore frameworks for creating, co-designing and implementing community-engaged projects that expand access to information and strengthen critical thinking skills essential to a healthy democracy. Katy Hamilton, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation’s senior director of workforce and career development, will also speak at the event, highlighting the foundation’s community-focused initiatives, including its collaborations with Seo. Employees have until midnight Friday to enroll in the 2026 State Employee Health Plan. This is an active enrollment, meaning all employees with current coverage or wishing to have coverage in 2026 must enroll through the Membership Administration Portal (MAP). Members who have waived coverage will remain waived unless they enroll. Please see the SEHP Open Enrollment Guide to review changes for 2026 and to select a plan.
Celebrate Homecoming 2025: KU will host its 113th Homecoming with special events all week, culminating with the football game against Oklahoma State at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. KU Alumni has announced faculty finalists for the Honor for Outstanding Progressive Educator (HOPE) Award as well as student finalists for major Homecoming awards. Read more.

Dole Institute looks ahead to 2026 midterm elections: The groundwork already is being laid for highly consequential 2026 midterm elections, as the two parties jockey over congressional redistricting, controversies over the Trump agenda, political violence and Democrats’ search for a unifying message. The event will examine all of those elements on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Dole Institute with Jerry Seib, Dole Institute Visiting Fellow and Former Executive Washington Editor of the Wall Street Journal, and Amy Walter, Editor-in-Chief of the Cook Political Report.
