Dear Colleagues,
According to a 2013 British Council survey titled "Culture at Work," the skills most highly-valued by employers include:
- demonstrating respect for others;
- building trust;
- working effectively in diverse teams;
- and being open to new ideas/ways of thinking.
Students can develop these skills by studying abroad!
Studying abroad challenges students to adapt to different cultural contexts and comfort zones, build a more sophisticated global perspective, and to develop a wider range of strategies for communicating and relating to others. Along with the marketable skills that students develop while abroad, they also grow in self confidence and self awareness. Study abroad does not develop these skills and attitudes at the same rate for everyone on every program; students must actively work to grow personally, academically and professionally during their study abroad, and it is vital that we design programs that facilitate the development of these skills and attitudes.
