From The Director's Desk...

I am a huge fan of WYSU. I know that sounds kind of funny coming from someone who has worked at WYSU for over 31 years, but it is true: I am a huge fan. As a listener, I can go to 88.5 at any time of the day or night, and know I will find something special, beautiful, thought-provoking, perhaps challenging, and usually, unique. That doesn’t mean I’m always into everything I hear, but I always appreciate that this intelligent programming is available to me and to everyone within the reach of our signal. And although that distinctiveness doesn’t mean everyone is going to listen, far from it, but what an opportunity WYSU presents to everyone in our community on a daily basis! It is such a joy to help make that happen.
Like a lot of people, I often figuratively carry my work home with me, maybe stressing out a little about this or that, but such operational concerns never diminishes my listener experience. Throughout the evening, the “not at work” me can really enjoy the fruits of the “work” me (and the rest of the WYSU staff). Performance Today and evening classical music always opens my ears, my heart, and my mind. That is a wonderful thing! And then on the weekend, I know I am likely to hear something unexpected and fascinating on astonishingly great programs like The Ted Radio Hour, Freakonomics Radio, It’s Been a Minute, and Latino USA. The weekend brings so many possibilities for random lifelong learning moments and opportunities to become a more thoughtful and aware person.
So although the administrative work is not always thrilling, every time I turn on WYSU at home or when I am out and about, I can say, “Ah yes, this is what makes it all worthwhile.”

Get to Know... Melissa Limpose, Broadcast Engineer
| |
Melissa Limpose has lived in Northeast Ohio her whole life. She grew up on a small dairy farm, but she’s always been into tech. She wrote her first computer program when she was 10 years old on an Atari 800XL. She received a B.A. in Communication in 1998 and a B.S. in Computer Science in 2000, both from Kent State University. She started graduate school in fall of 2000 and taught at Kent State for a couple of years, while also working as a Programmer/Analyst. However, she felt like she had another calling. In 2002, she was hired as a Broadcast Engineer at Clear Channel Radio (IheartMedia), and while learning the job, she became fascinated with RF transmission. She stayed there for almost 19 years, until June of 2021, when she came to WYSU.
Currently, she lives with her husband and two teenagers, and she tries to be a good role model for them. Because of this, she enrolled here at Youngstown State University in 2013 and finished her Master’s degree in CIS. She is hoping they see the value in learning new things and continue to be inspired to, no matter how old they get.
In her spare time Melissa likes spend time with family and friends. Between their piano lessons and hockey practices, she tries to get her kids out and exploring nature. She has an interest in paranormal events and likes to look for evidence with friends in the hopes of capturing some kind of “proof”, but this is done with a light-hearted approach, just for fun...unless they actually find something!

Are you listening to?... Hearts of Space | Saturdays at 6 AM
| |
Slow music for fast times. Hearts of Space is an uninterrupted hour of Ambient, Space, and Contemplative music from around the world and across the centuries. It has been broadcast over WYSU for more than 35 years, and has gained a faithful audience who find it to be a valuable resource for calm, concentration, and deep listening.
Hearts of Space is one of the longest-running and most popular music series on public radio. Produced and hosted by Stephen Hill with associate producer Steve Davis, it launched nationally in January 1983 after ten years as a San Francisco Bay Area late night program on KPFA-FM in Berkeley.
The show anticipated the rise of electronic music, new age, and Minimalism as popular genres in the 1980s, but always went beyond them in scope and quality by bringing together contemplative, space-creating music, and soundscapes from a wide range of both new and traditional genres.
"Safe journey, space fans, wherever you are."
Tune in! Saturday mornings at 6:00.
