Hello, Fellow Dog Lovers!
Off we go!
It's been a whirlwind month, from a much-needed vacation with my family to last weekends amazing Dog Bite Prevention & Behaviour Conference in the UK, to where I am now in Northern England teaching a new class of Victoria Stilwell Academy students enrolled in our Dog Trainer Course.
Then I'm headed back to the US next week just in time for the 4th of July where we continue work on my fascinating new TV projects that are in pre-production.
Lots of great info in this edition of the newsletter, so be sure to read it all the way through - let's get started!

INCREASE YOUR DOG'S FOCUS & CONCENTRATION
Looking for ways to increase your dog's ability to focus in various situations?
The Magic Hand game involves placing food in the palm of your hand and gently pushing individual treats through your fingers for your dog to catch.
Check out these tips from Positively contributor Tom Mitchell for tapping into your dog's full potential.

"MY DOG DOESN'T LIKE OTHER DOGS"
We have all seen it:
  1. Person and dog are walking along the street.
  2. Dog spots another person or dog and goes ballistic.
  3. Barking, lunging, ducking and diving, a flurry of teeth and claws ensues, looking for all the world as if she wants to eat everyone in her path.
Then we see the poor owner trying to deal with this explosion. Usually he tries to restrain the dog physically, shout at her, maybe yank her around on her leash, before beating a disorderly retreat to lick his social wounds and repair his dignity.
The social pressure to appear to be in control of your group - whether they be people or animals - is very strong. Read Positively contributor Beverley Courtney's take on how to deal with this all-too-common issue:

Desensitization and counter conditioning are valuable skills to use with fearful dogs and great care must be taken when using these tools in order to make sure that we don’t push dogs beyond their limits, making their fears worse.
