Smarthome Devices: How Much Speed Do You Need?
11

1Smarthome devices seemed to be some of the most popular gifts that were gifted this Christmas. With more a more devices needing to be connected to the internet, it is time to ask yourself if your speed is enough for your household.

Internet speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). The higher the number is, the faster your internet speed is. Certain devices and actions require a more bandwidth than others. For example, sending or receiving an email will not require as much bandwidth as streaming a movie on Netflix. And if whatever you’re streaming is in HD (high definition) or 4k (even higher definition yet), the demand for your household’s Internet speed will increase dramatically. This also holds true with various smarthome devices.

Wi-Fi cameras and video doorbells have become one of the most popular smarthome devices on the market. Although these devices are very useful, it is important to remember that camera-equipped gadgets like the Ring Doorbell require a decent amount of bandwidth. The Amazon Echo, Nest Thermostat, iRobot Roomba and many other smarthome devices also need the internet to work.

So if you have noticed that your internet speed has been affected by the addition of smarthome devices, please give our office a call. It could be time to increase your speed or even replace your router. Right now Hartelco is offering $10 off a new router if you bring in your old one! Having your smarthome work properly will only happen if you have the correct speed for your home. Think of everything in your home that is using your internet. Between a laptop or two, tablets, smartphones, streaming devices, gaming consoles and now smarthome devices – do you have enough speed?

Call us today to find out more about our internet speeds and what is right for your home.

Stay Safe! Use our IPTV Weather App!

There is a good chance of severe winter weather this weekend! We want to remind our IPTV customers about our WEATHER APP that allows you to get weather information with just one click.

Push the RED button for current weather conditions. Note that you can also get weather conditions for other area towns such as Yankton, Sioux Falls, Norfolk, and Omaha. Just use the "arrow" keys around the OK button to switch from town to town. The default location is Hartington.

Then push the GREEN button for the 5-day forecast for the town you selected above. Again, the default is Hartington.

Push the YELLOW button to see the current weather radar. Note that if you select Hartington, Yankton, or Sioux Falls, you will get the Sioux Falls Doppler radar. However if you select Norfolk or Omaha, you will see the Omaha regional Doppler radar.

Push the BLUE button while the radar is displayed to animate the screen to see storm movement!

And remember, if you need to drive during bad winter weather,
please remember to view the road conditions first by going to www.511.nebraska.gov.

How To Care For Your Devices In The Cold

Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, don't like cold weather. When a lithium-ion battery is exposed to cold temperatures, it can drain faster than normal or indicate it has ample power remaining and then suddenly go dead. Low temperatures can also make a device's glass surfaces more sensitive to cracks and breaks, especially if there's already a nick.

Here's what to do:

  • To keep your device from getting too cold, don't leave it alone for long in frigid places such as a parked car. It's best to stash it inside pockets closest to your person, where it can absorb some of your body heat.
  • In the event your device does shut down, do not restart it until you're inside and have given it time to warm up. Restarting immediately could actually cause more harm and shorten your battery life.
  • Cases also help to keep devices warm. You may want to consider the cases designed to regulate a phone's temperature in extreme weather.

To get specifics for your device, consult the manufacturer's website.
