News That Rocks

Happy May, Rockers!

Warm Greetings from All of Us at School of Rock Silver Spring!
We are so happy to see that our students are truly thriving in their lessons and rehearsals! They are continually engaged, prepared and energetic, and their skills are growing with each session. Although a scary time, there has been the silver lining! We have the chance to meet some inspirational musicians  in our Guest Artist series who are living the dream, and the opportunity to explore new things and gain new skills that  we normally don't have time for in our Master Classes and Performance Groups.  It has been inspiring to see how music has been a real respite in all the change and chaos, not just for our students, but for us as well.  THANK YOU so much to all of our Silver Spring families for being our partners in this new way of creating music together and keep our community thriving.

Much love,

Laura, Neel, Liz, Brooks, Jaime, Sean, Matt, Chris, Jeff, P’Nut, Kelly, Henry, and Tempest

We're Rockin' Remote!

Keep up the great work you guys!

Student Spotlight of the Month - Meet Lourdes!

What do you like most about the new School of Rock Remote platform?
Although we cannot be in the same room, or have the best virtual connection, it shows that we all have a great passion to learn and that inspires me to want to be a great musician.

What concepts are you currently working on in your online lessons?
I have been perfecting various sticking techniques during my private lessons. I have been practicing Imagine Dragon’s Believer; David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel; and Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in The Wall. I have also been rocking out on Blur’s Song 2.

What advice would you give to a new student about to start online lessons?
Online lessons can be a little challenging at first but it helps you listen and pay more attention which makes you a better player and band member. With a little persistence, it will be a fun, learning experience.

What is your all time favorite School of Rock experience?
Tough question. I have so many of them. I loved playing with my band during our fall and spring concerts for our parents. I have also enjoyed the costume parties - and the baked goods!

Name your three favorite bands:
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix and The Experience
Queen

Just a few quotes from our Guest Artists - Be Inspired!

Pro Tip of the Month - Meet Kelly!

Kelly is the newest addition to the Silver Spring team and has blown us away with her breadth of musical knowlege, exceptional teaching skills and creativity. Her vocal students have been raving about her lessons since we launched the online program and we feel so lucky to have her on board to help us make these remote lessons successful - we can't wait to see her in action once we get back to the studio!
What is your favorite thing about working with students on the new School of Rock Remote platform?
I love how much this new platform is opening new doors technologically for both myself and my students. I am learning new ways to collaborate as a musician from long distance and it’s a good reminder that we are all interconnected and have the possibility to create together even if we are not physically in the same room! I’ve also loved asking students more about their journey during this strange and somewhat difficult time. It’s says a lot about the struggles we are all sharing at this time and how we can uplift and take our minds off of it by focusing on art.

What are three tips you would give your students to enhance their SoRR experience during this time?
I’d encourage them to be open to the shift and to be patient with technology, because it can be frustrating. Additionally I would encourage students to use the same amount of energy in the lesson that they do in performance. I’m sure it’s easy to relax and be laid back when you are at home but you benefit most from rehearsal when you give it your best effort. I also suggest students to take advantage of all of the tech and apps we have available to create music and songwriters these days. It helps add to your toolbox as an artist.

How would you approach working with a new student over Zoom?
I always start by asking what goals they have for the lessons and we go from there. I am an artist and educator that focuses on ritual and habit, so we often do the same warm up with new exercises added on when the student is ready. These warm ups are meant to help students access their voice in a confident way when they are not in a lesson. Finally, we spend a good amount of time working on songs during the lesson. This process is usually stop and go because there are sometimes certain parts of songs that give students trouble.

Over all I let my students guide the way. I like to check in throughout the lesson to see what they would like to do next. I think this helps me learn the student and the student realize that they can be empowered as an artist.

What is one piece of wisdom you would give to all of your students?
You never stop learning! No matter how old or experienced you become as an artist you should approach everything with a fresh mind and be open to learning new things. It makes processes more enjoyable, it is the mark of a professional and it helps with collaboration or working with others.
