Subway Executive Draws From Lessons Learned as a Laker
Len Van Popering, '94, is the chief brand and innovation officer of Subway Restaurants. Since Van Popering works directly with teams embedded in dozens of countries around the world, international travel is a required part of the job. It was a big change for the young man who grew up in West Michigan and had never flown on an airplane before enrolling at Grand Valley.

New Tradition Lights Up Convocation Ceremony
In her first Convocation address, President Philomena V. Mantella led the audience of first-year students, faculty and staff members, and guests through a new tradition she said symbolizes a commitment to individual success and a connection to the campus community. Representatives from four campus segments (faculty, current students, alumni and new students) took turns at a table lighting the letters in GVSU.

On August 27, President Philomena V. Mantella joined Alumni Association Board president, Tim Bulson, '09, for a Q&A session with a live and virtual audience. During the session she shared her vision of where she sees Grand Valley headed.

Mitchell White Wins GAM Championship
Recent Grand Valley State graduate Mitchell White claimed his second career Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Championship, clinching the victory August 13. 
It's the second GAM victory for White in the last five years and third by a Grand Valley State golfer in that span. White won the championship the summer before his freshman season in 2015 while classmate Alex Scott took home the trophy in 2017.

This season there will be new food selections and a few changes to concessions operations as concessionaire Aramark - the concessionaire for all GVSU athletic venues - in partnership with GVSU Athletics, has responded to feedback from fans.

Club Sport Highlight: Dan Martin Selected to be Rowing's Head Coach
Grand Valley State University Club Sports is excited to announce Dan Martin as the new Head Coach for the Men's and Women's Rowing Club. Martin steps into the position after starting his first season, '17-'18, as an Assistant Coach, and most recently as Co-Head Coach for the Laker Navy during the '18-'19 season.

Scholarship Will Benefit Students Studying Art, Biomdecial Sciences
Carmen Nochera-Wilkens, professor of biomedical sciences, has established a scholarship in memory of her late husband, Mark Wilkens, supporting Grand Valley students as they pursue degrees in fine arts and/or biomedical sciences. 
His artwork is on display in the West Wall Gallery of the L.V. Eberhard Center, on the Pew Campus, until October 25. All of the works in the exhibition are available for purchase in direct support of the scholarship.

Football Alumnus, Leader Gives Back to Program
Former standout Laker defensive lineman Michael McFadden, '06, played professional football after graduating. Now, he credits his GVSU experience for much of his success in life.
McFadden said he was blessed to play football and receive his education from GVSU because others before him donated. Now he is making a positive impact on society because of the lessons he learned.
