REMINDER: NSCM Clubs and Organizations Survey (ACTION REQUESTED!)
The Nicholson School hopes everyone had a great beginning to the fall semester. As you’ve connected with students in your clubs and organizations, we would kindly request that you fill out the survey related to the organization (if you haven’t yet done so).
As we look toward continuing to provide a sense of community and student involvement this fall, the NSCM Clubs and Organizations Open House team needs some information.
If you represent/advise a club or organization linked to the Nicholson School of Communication and Media in some way, please take a moment and fill out this survey/information form. This does not need to be a formal RSO. It can include publications, broadcasts and similar.
Before you do, please have the following information handy:
- Contact information for student officers
- A logo (png or jpg)
- An elevator pitch or description of your organization
- Any webpages or social links for the organization
- Joining requirements
This request is two-fold. We will be updating our Nicholson School clubs and organizations section of the website with your updated information, and it will help gauge interest in creating a virtual club and organization area for students to visit this fall.
Thank you for your assistance in this. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Douglas Blemker or Andrea Scott if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

Protocol for Positive COVID-19 Cases
When a student is confirmed to have tested positive, Student Health Services (SHS) will inform the provost’s office/Faculty Excellence. A representative from Faculty Excellence will inform the instructor that a student who is enrolled in an in-person attendance course has tested positive. Obviously, if the student is taking an in-person class, they will not be physically attending the course.
After communicating with representatives from Human Resources and Dr. Michael Deichen, these are the steps that will be followed after a student is confirmed to have tested positive and when the student wants to return to the classroom. For a student to return to the in-person course:
- The student must get medical clearance by calling the UCF COVID line (407/823-2509).
- The UCF COVID line nurse will verify a student’s release from COVID isolation or quarantine and send the student an email that contains a “Release for Return to Class”.
- Before the student is allowed to return to the in-person class, the student is required to provide the email containing the “Release to Return to Class” to the in-person instructor. If needed, instructors can verify the “Release to Return to Class” by contacting UCF COVID line.

Bookstore Recommended Course Materials
Barnes and Noble added some items to the website where students find the materials they need to purchase for their classes. This includes a range of study aids, etc. This is problematic because the only materials listed on that page should be those chosen for the course by the faculty member teaching it, not those suggested by the bookstore.
The bookstore has offered up-sell items such as these on the shelves in the store next to course books for a long time, but the virtual representation of them seems much more confusing and problematic, particularly in this time when students have enough confusion to contend with. Here is a screenshot example so you can see how it looked. Faculty members in STEM classes in particular may want to confirm with students what materials are actually required for their courses.
Associate Vice Provost, Division of Student Learning and Academic Success, Melody A. Bowdon, plans to meet with the B&N team over the coming weeks to discuss how to move forward and perhaps what might be an appropriate way to provide information to students about additional materials they might find helpful, including vetting those suggestions through the faculty members, If any of you are interested in being part of that conversation or know of faculty members who might be, feel free to let me Melody know.
