Best Application Paper Ward at the IEEE IROS 2025 |
Andy Li, a robotics Ph.D. student in Dr. Damiano Zanotto's Wearable Robotics Systems Lab, won the Best Application Paper Award at IROS2025. His work introduced a reinforcement learning–based assist-as-needed controller for ankle exoskeletons that adapts assistance in real time, encouraging users to stay actively engaged during gait training. In a proof-of-concept study, it outperformed a conventional controller and showed short-term retention, underscoring our lab’s broader effort to develop personalized, self-adapting exoskeletons for gait rehabilitation.

Ocean Engineering Ph.D. Student Earns CERF and AERS Honors |
Nathaniel Nwogwu, an ocean engineering Ph.D. student in Dr. Phillip Orton's lab, is advancing our understanding of water level variability and flooding in back-barrier estuaries using statistical and numerical models to support coastal management and flood mitigation. This semester, he delivered a traditional oral presentation at the 2025 Coastal & Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) Conference titled “Drivers of water level variability and flooding in back-barrier estuaries” and received both a CERF Student Participation Award and an Atlantic Estuarine Research Society (AERS) Student Travel Grant to support his conference participation and professional development.
