Dear Pilot parents and families,

It’s hard to believe, but today marks the fifth week of the semester, and tomorrow marks the beginning of fall. While campus isn’t the same without the liveliness of our in-person community, we hope your student is settling into their virtual classes.
As you can imagine, every student’s situation and needs this fall are very different, which means that the support resources and information that would be most helpful to you as a parent will also be different. I want to recognize that while everything in these newsletters may not be applicable to your family, we hope you find some of the information helpful. If you still have questions, please let us know how we can help.
We also wanted to remind our families that while the University primarily communicates directly with students and usually can’t share personal updates about your student with you (due to federal laws like FERPA), we always welcome your outreach. At the end of the day, you know your student best and may notice changes in them before anyone else. One way you can notify the University about student concerns is through the Care Team Program. If you become concerned about your student’s physical, emotional, academic or personal health, we encourage you to submit a Care Team Referral. The Care Team Program can assess the situation, offer support, and provide referrals to the breadth of resources available through UP.
The success of our students is everyone’s top priority, and we appreciate your partnership!

Sincerely,
Katie Seccombe

A MESSAGE FROM THE PROVOST

Before the start of the semester, Provost Herbert Medina welcomed the Class of 2024! Take a look as he explains his duties as Provost and provides the three “Cs” to find academic success this school year – Communication, Community, and Consistency. We think that all class years will find the tips helpful!

Forming a strong Pilot community around your student is one of our top priorities at UP, and we recognize that this is especially difficult right now. Our Student Affairs departments have come up with creative ways to keep our students engaged and to support them in building connections with each other this semester. See highlights from Campus Ministry, the Office of Student Activities, and the Career Center!

COMMUNICATION WITH PROFESSORS

CollegiateParent provides great advice and strategies on communication with professors: “The student-professor relationship in college is one of the most important to cultivate. Professors want to develop strong relationships with their students, and students should want the same. Here are a few tips that you can use to coach your student through the process... of creating an open line of communication with a professor.”

Mark your calendars for a Pilots Fun Run on October 10 and 11! Wherever you live, we invite you to stretch your legs, get away from your screen, and be in virtual community with one another over the weekend. Alumni, students, families, and friends of UP are all invited to participate in this weekend of unity. Registration and details coming soon!

Typically, midterm examinations fall within the week or two leading up to Fall Break. (This year, Fall Break takes place from October 12–16, which means your student will not have any classes during this time.) What is a “midterm,” and how can you help your student prepare? Check out our recommendations.

For students staying on or near campus, or for anyone interested in learning how they can help prevent the spread of COVID-19, check out the helpful Pilots Prevent resources. Together we share the responsibility to help cultivate safe and healthy communities for all.
