News from Sydney Cancer Partners

Welcome to our first Newsletter for 2023. Although it might seem a distant memory, we hope you all enjoyed a restful break spending time with family or friends and doing things you enjoy.

2023 started with a flurry of activity for Sydney Cancer Partners and some wonderful success and recognition for a number of members.

At the end of 2022 we said goodbye to Cara McFarlane, our Communications and Events Officer, who has commenced a new role as the Events Manager at the Cancer Institute NSW. Cara made a huge impact in her time with us; leading the development of our website, keeping members up to date with all of our activities and playing a key role in the organisation of the inaugural NSW Cancer Conference last September. We look forward to working with Cara in her new role at CINSW.

Announcing the inaugural SCP Translational Partners Fellows

Sydney Cancer Partners has awarded two Translational Partners Fellowships in a unique scheme that pairs a researcher with a clinician-researcher.

Postdoctoral research fellow Dr Dannel Yeo from The Centenary Institute at The University of Sydney and Clinical Associate Professor Kate Mahon from Chris O’Brien Lifehouse will work together to explore ways to improve the management and outcomes for patients with colorectal and appendiceal cancers that have metastasised to the peritoneum. Their research project aims to identify liquid biopsy biomarkers to aid clinical decision making, develop tumour models to test new therapies and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.

The second partnership brings together paediatric oncologist Dr Bhavna Padhye from the Children’s Hospital Westmead and computational biologist, Dr Rebecca Poulos from the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) who will work to embed newly developed, clinically relevant, proteomic technology into the cancer clinic.

SCP Director Professor Anna DeFazio recognised in the 2023 Australia Day Honours

Prof DeFazio was recognised in the 2023 Australia Day Honours as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for her significant service to Medicine, particularly cancer research. Congratulations to Anna on this significant and well-deserved recognition of her leadership, research and mentorship of the next generation of cancer researchers. Full citation.

NSW Cancer Research Education State-wide Seminar Series

SCP in conjunction with NSW Regional Health Partners and Maridulu Budyari Gumul (SPHERE), are pleased to host the NSW Cancer Research Education Seminar Series. Seminars are scheduled for the 3rd Tuesday of every month.

Next meeting 21 March, 12.30 - 1.30 pm

Please contact us if you would like to be involved in any way. This could include arranging or moderating a session, suggesting a topic you would like included in the series or a contribution to the Educational Molecular Tumour Board.

We have established a process to help researchers engage with consumers by facilitating payment (honorarium) or reimbursement of costs incurred by consumers while engaging in research.
