Study: Novel combined vaccine therapy for malignant gliomas in kids and young adults |
Two Children’s Minnesota neurooncologists are leading a clinical trial for a potential treatment of diffuse midline glioma (DMG) and recurrent high-grade glioma (HGG), two of the most difficult brain tumors to treat.
The phase 1, single institution clinical trial was recently launched by Anne Bendel, MD, and Maggie Skrypek, MD, pediatric neurooncologists at Children’s Minnesota, to determine the dose and safety of a novel combined vaccine therapy for newly diagnosed pediatric and young adult DMG and HGG patients.

Children's Minnesota expands services with in-house cardiac MRI in Minneapolis |
The cardiovascular program at Children’s Minnesota recently expanded its services with the addition of a new cardiac MRI scanner centrally located at its hospital campus in Minneapolis. Children’s Minnesota cardiac imaging experts and pediatric cardiologists, Angela Kelle, MD, and Charles Shepard, MD, consider this the best-case scenario for kids who require the highly specialized heart scans: the MRI scans are now done in-house at a pediatric hospital with providers who are specially trained to care for kids, which means they can do it efficiently and are ready to respond to any situation or emergency.
“The new cardiac MRI scanner at Children’s Minnesota hospital integrates all of our pediatric cardiovascular services at one location, with imaging experts trained and experienced in pediatric and congenital heart disease,” said Dr. Shepard. “We’re excited about how this technology and service are going to enhance the ways we care for our CV patients and their families.”

Spotlight: Spina Bifida Clinic affiliations offer comprehensive, coordinated care |
The Spina Bifida Clinic at Children’s Minnesota offers comprehensive, coordinated care that brings together specialists and services for the best possible outcomes for patients from diagnosis up to age 21. Since October 2023, the clinic has worked with Shriners Children’s to bring together top orthopedic specialists with the goal of preserving and improving the function, strength and mobility of patients with spina bifida, all under one roof.
The Midwest Fetal Care Center (MWFCC) is also included in the clinic's collaborative care model. A collaboration between Allina Health and Children's Minnesota, MWFCC brings together a multi-disciplinary team of highly trained maternal-fetal medicine experts from Allina Health and pediatric and neonatal specialists from Children's Minnesota. Spina Bifida Clinic provider visits begin at the first patient consult with MWFCC and support continues throughout a patient’s admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
