From the Office of the Dean |
Good morning! I hope that this Monday before Thanksgiving finds you all rested, well, and looking forward to sharing meals and memories with friends and family in a few days. As we all are called to pause, and reflect on what we are thankful for, I want you all to know that I feel incredibly fortunate to be serving as Dean of CHDCM. I am grateful for the warm welcome that I have received from everyone in my three months here at Seton Hall, and for the energy and enthusiasm that our students, faculty, staff, and alums have shown for the University and our new College. I am truly thankful for you all, and for all that you do—every day—to make our campus and our classrooms so special.
I am also grateful to those who have graduated from our College, but who still keep us in their minds and hearts. I’ve spent a great deal of time over the last two weeks with CHDCM alums, both at our reception at the New Jersey Education Association conference and at meals during the National Communication Association conference. The people that I’ve met come from different departments, degree programs, and decades…but what they all have in common is their strong commitment to Seton Hall, and an appreciation for the impact that our University has had on their lives. This is truly something to be thankful for.
Finally, with our second undergraduate open house just behind us, I also want to express my gratitude to all of those CHDCM folks who gave of their time and energy to recruit our next class of students! We have an amazing, dedicated faculty (as our alums have repeatedly stressed!), and so many of them came out yesterday to help promote our programs: Christine Krus, Tom Rondinella, Branden Buehler, Matt Pressman, Jeanne Salvatore, Deirdre Yates, Dena Levine, Grace May, Mary Mueller, and Edmund Adjapong. Some of our incredible students were also on hand to share their perspectives and help with recruiting, and so I also want to thank them specifically: Hailee Bissell, Kristina Brown, Eliana Driesse, Amanda Grace, Meghan Johnson, Lesley Joseph, Sarah Leitao, Jessica Marciniak, Elizabeth McCollum, Madison Miranda, Sarai Romero, Jenna Ryan, Samantha Scelta, Ivona Szaro, Marissa Todd, Faith Valerius, Thais Villarevia, Abigail Walker, Hannah Tate, Issys Ortega, Brianna Fernandez, Taylor Strauss, Emily Barranzuela, Kayla Wager, Madelyn Sens, Lauren Hall, Rachel Suazo, Aaron Wenger, Caila Yarwood, Miles Curry, Kelsey Kaelin, Crystal Magan, Priscilla Burke, Lisa Pescatore and Ethan Wojciechowski. Finally, I also want to thank the folks who worked to organize our second CHDCM Open House of the year, and ensure that it was a huge success: Brittany Scoles, Sherry Mahfouz, Omayra Arocho, and Amanda Carcione.
Truly, I have so much to be thankful for as I continue in this role, so please know how grateful I am to you all.
With that, read on, and enjoy the good news and shout outs! As always, keep your good news and event notes coming, have a great holiday, and enjoy the (short) week!

For the first CHDCM Shout we'd like to mention is Dr. Edmund Adjapong, who co-authored the book Teaching for Liberation: On Freedom Dreaming in the Field of Hip-Hop Education.
In celebration of hip-hop's 50th anniversary, the authors interviewed scholars and community-engaged educators who have contributed to the field of hip-hop and education with the goal of reflecting on established research and activism within the field of hip-hop and education. Congratulations, Dr. Adjapong!

Another Shout goes to Professor Jason Tramm previously served as Chorus Master for Tetro Grattacielo's Oct. 28th performance of Spontini's La Vestale at the Gerald Lynch Theater in Manhattan, which had not been performed in Manhattan since 1923.
According to a review in Voix des Arts,
"Comprised of professional singers and students from Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, Teatro Grattacielo’s chorus sang with musical and verbal clarity that demonstrated the effectiveness of the training that they received from chorus master Jason Tramm."
Professor Tramm also led the Seton Hall University Chamber Choir in singing the National Anthem at the SHU Men Basketball on Nov. 11.
Congratulations Professor Tramm!

We'd also like to give a Shout to Dr. James Daly, who was named Volunteer of the Month for the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking for the month of December.
Professor Daly is a founding member and currently the longest serving committee member for the Education Committee.
Congratulations, Dr. Daly!

Student Organization Highlight |
New Jersey Student Education Association (NJSEA)
The New Jersey Student Education Association (NJSEA) is an organization committed to professional development, community involvement, and ongoing advocacy for educators and students. Involvement in the NJSEA on the local, state, and national levels allows members to gain multiple and informed perspectives on many aspects in the education field. NJSEA provides students of the College a familial support system in addition to immediate access to their future colleagues and every advantage of membership.
A great example of this allowed for some NJSEA members and others from the College the opportunity to attend the NJEA Convention in Atlantic City this past month. To learn more about NJSEA, feel free to contact Dr. Edmund Adjapong.
