MNPS celebrated Arts in Education week Sept. 8-14

National Arts in Education Week is a celebration recognizing the transformative power of the arts in education. MNPS students, educators, parents and principals, found unique ways to celebrate the arts in education during this special week. Community members are encouraged to continue to share their arts education stories and use the hashtags #ArtsMoveMNPS and #MusicMakesUs on social media.

Siemens gives 25 schools STEM modules

The Siemens Foundation, along with other community partners, will provide 25 MNPS schools with Siemens STEM day modules at no cost to the district. In addition, Siemens plans to expand its support to the MNPS Community Achieves department by increasing cereal donations. This year, they plan to provide 7,000 boxes helping a total of 29 schools.

The partnership, made possible through a $7,500 grant, will offer a variety of tools and
resources to aid teachers in reinventing their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math) curriculums with new hands-on activities and teacher support centers. The goal is to identify challenges that may hinder student success in STEM areas an ignite interest in those subjects by introducing them to careers in various STEM-related fields.

Hume-Fogg student named classical student composer

Congratulations to Hume-Fogg Magnet High School student Kevin Ou who was the recipient of the first 91Classical Student Composer Fellowship from Nashville Public Radio. The ninth grade fellow has played the piano since third grade and later picked up the violin in the middle school orchestra. He began writing solo pieces in seventh grade and composed a piece for his school orchestra which premiered during his eighth grade orchestra’s winter concert.

Ou, along with three other Nashville recipients, will study composition throughout the 2019-2020 school year with musical mentors. They will have opportunities to meet composers visiting Nashville and to observe professional musical ensembles in action. In June 2020, they will each premiere a piece in a live broadcast on 91Classical’s show Live In Studio C.

Eddie George surprises school with equipment

Former Tennessee Titan Eddie George surprised East Nashville High School players with new football equipment, helmets, tickets to a Titans game and a check for $10,000 for the school. The donation was made possible through the Tennessee Titans, Campbell's Chunky Soup and Riddell Sports. Watch the video below.

Instruments donated to Hunters Lane High

Hunters Lane students were surprised last week when the curtain of their school auditorium stage opened to reveal new musical instruments, a gift to their school totaling $84,000.

The reveal of trumpets, sousaphones and flutes by StubHub’s General Manager of Music Jeff Poirier came before a performance by country artist Chris Lane, who sang his hit, “Take Back Home Girl.”

The donation, which also includes 100 chairs for music students, is part of StubHub’s #TicketForward program, in partnership with Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation ‐ a three‐year commitment to put more than $3 million in instruments into public school music programs.

Pennington awarded Silver LEED Certification

Pennington Elementary School was recently awarded a LEED “Silver” level designation.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is one of the most popular green building certification programs used worldwide. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council it includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods that aims to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. Pennington joins the ranks of 15 other MNPS facilities obtaining LEED certification.

Notable statistics for Pennington:
• Potable water use reduction
• Energy cost savings by utilizing high-performance building systems
• Construction waste diverted from the landfill
• Recycled content in materials
• Regional materials
• Use of low-emitting materials for adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, flooring and composite wood products.
• Innovation in design: Green Housekeeping program implemented by MNPS.
• Innovation in design: Integrated Pest Management program implemented by MNPS.

MNPS to host support staff Career Fair

MNPS is looking for dynamic, eager candidates to serve as bus drivers, paraprofessionals, substitutes and nutrition services team members.

Representatives will be on-site for interviews and to administer the free cashier and para-professional tests. Candidates could leave with a job by the afternoon!

Free School Choice Festival Oct. 15

The MNPS School Choice Festival is a free event which allows families to visit all 167 school options in one place. Come talk to school staff, visit community partner booths or visit the Kid's Zone to watch a puppet show or play with robots!

WHERE: The Nashville Fairgrounds (enter on Nolensville Pike)
