Undergraduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences BA or BS degree program must earn 12 credits and a grade point average of 2.0 or better for each semester of full-time enrollment. (Grades of W and Incomplete are not earned credits.) Please note that students with an authorized Reduced Course Load accommodation and seniors approved for part-time enrollment are held to commensurate criteria.
Academic Alert: An undergraduate will be sent an academic alert at the end of any semester in which the student earned fewer than 12 credits but more than 8 credits and/or failed one course of any credit value. The student’s advisor will be notified. No transcript notation will be made. Students who receive an academic alert are still in good standing.
Probation: A student will be placed on academic probation at the end of any semester in which a student earned 8 credits or fewer and/or a semester GPA lower than 2.0. The student’s advisor will be notified. A notation of academic probation will be on the student’s unofficial transcript. Students placed on probation are not in good standing. To return to good academic standing, in the following semester the student must complete a minimum of 12 credits and earn a minimum term GPA of 2.0.
Required to Withdraw: If a student who was previously placed on academic probation meets the benchmarks for probation again in any subsequent semester, then the student will normally be required to withdraw for one semester. The student’s advisor and parent/guardian will be notified.
Permanent Academic Withdrawal: A student who returns from having been required to withdraw for a semester and meets the criteria for academic probation in any semester after the return will be subject to a permanent academic withdrawal. The student’s advisor and parent/guardian will be notified.
Full information about Academic Standing for BA/BS students and combined degree students, as well as other undergraduate degrees, can be found on the Academic Advising website and in the 2023-2024 Bulletin.
