Joshua Christiaan Steps Up During Medical Emergency
When a passenger experienced a medical emergency, TSA officer Joshua Christiaan (he/his) immediately rushed to help.
While another employee called the Communications Center, Joshua retrieved an automated external defibrillator unit (AED). He followed the device’s instructions – the AED automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and treats them through defibrillation and helped perform CPR. Joshua, with help from a medically-trained bystander who stepped up to assist, worked diligently until first responders arrived.
Joshua was a winner at the PDX People Customer Service Awards, where we recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary. We'll hold the next awards ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25. The winners in each category – along with members of our volunteer working committee – will be invited to attend the event in person while it is live-streamed on Facebook. We'll share more details, along with the link, in the next newsletter and on the PDX People website.
Missed the last virtual awards ceremony? View the event recording or read about past winners. You can also nominate an employee who embodies the PDX People values and serves as a shining example of great customer service for next quarter – submit a nomination now.

Stay Safe at Work:
Masks, COVID-19 Protocols and Testing
With the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, it's vital to continue maintaining safety protocols while at work.
Both the CDC and TSA continue to require that masks be worn at all U.S. airports, on airplanes and on other forms of public transportation. This means that if you're working inside, riding the shuttle bus or just passing through the terminal, you must wear a mask. Refusal to wear a mask in the airport violates federal law and may result in penalties or removal.
Additionally, with rising cases and quarantine and isolation changes, testing has become an important and sometimes difficult – resource to access. Check here for local testing options. For now, 211info remains the best resource for general COVID-19 questions, information about testing and access to vaccine or booster shot appointments. Find out where you can get vaccinated.
