The three transformative capital projects are moving forward in Chinatown, with upcoming traffic changes on Kearny Street and at Broadway Tunnel.

Bridge demolition work is expected to take place from Aug. 1 to 15. From Aug. 1 to 10, crews will remove the portion of the pedestrian bridge over Kearny Street, including the section connected to the Hilton Hotel. From Aug. 10 to 15, crews will complete bridge removal on the park side of Kearny Street.

Upcoming construction activities and traffic impacts: |
- Kearny Street will be fully closed between Clay and Washington
- Aug. 1, 1:00 a.m. to Aug. 3, 5:00 a.m.
- Aug. 8, 1:00 a.m. to Aug. 10, 5:00 a.m.
- Local business access will remain available.

Kearny Street will be partially closed between Clay and Washington
- July 30 to 31 and Aug. 3 to 7:

Aug. 10 to 15: two west-side lanes and the park-side sidewalk may close if additional time is needed to remove the bridge support. Two east-side lanes will remain open. Muni service and regular stops will remain unchanged.
- Kearny Street will be open with at least two lanes.
- Drivers may use the designated detour routes to avoid congestion.

The Portsmouth Square Garage will be closed Aug. 1-2 and Aug. 8-9. It will remain open Monday-Friday during the demolition.

For the duration of this work, expect construction vehicles, lane closures, slower traffic, temporary “No Parking | Tow Away” zones and pedestrian detours along this section of Kearny Street. Please follow directions from on-site flaggers and posted signs, and allow extra travel time due to possible construction delays. Call 311 for questions about parking tickets or towed vehicles.

During active off-haul operations in the park, the contractor may intermittently close the park-side sidewalk along Walter U. Lum Place to facilitate the removal of demolition debris.

| Traffic Detours During Full Closures |
ROUTE 1: northbound traffic on Kearny Street will be routed westbound on Sacramento Street → to northbound on Stockton Street → to eastbound on Jackson Street → to northbound Kearny Street.
ROUTE 2: northbound traffic on Kearny Street → to eastbound on Clay Street → to northbound on Sansome Street → to westbound on Washington Street → to northbound Kearny Street.

- The Kearny and Clay bus stop will be unavailable.
|
- Use bus stops at Clay and Montgomery or Kearny, just south of Jackson.
|
- Notices will be posted at affected stops and inside buses, with onboard announcements.
|
- Muni 8號 Bayshore 線將按第二條路線繞行。

- Customers may also use the regular Kearny bus stop just south of Jackson.

Earlier this month, Public Works joined Mayor Daniel Lurie, City officials and community members to mark the groundbreaking of the $76 million Chinatown Public Health Center renovation project. The project will deliver seismic upgrades, expanded dental services, new exam rooms and improved clinical spaces.

- The Broadway Tunnel will be fully closed from 7 a.m. Aug. 15 to 5 a.m. Aug. 17.
- During the closure, crews will install a scaffolding platform at the east tunnel entrance, apply temporary striping and set up construction staging and safety setup.

Following the full closure, the south-side bore (eastbound) will close for approximately 7 months, with the north-side bore (westbound) carrying one lane of traffic in each direction.
- The north-side bore will then close for approximately 7 months, with the south bore carrying one lane in each direction.
- Expect traffic delays during peak travel times.

Traffic Detours During Partial Closure

| During the partial closure, expected to continue until approximately November 2027, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the open tunnel bore.
Drivers who want to avoid delays can use the local and regional detour routes established for the full closure.

A contractor for the library project has been selected based on the City's bidding process to provide the best value for the work. The proposed construction contract is subject to approval by the Public Works Commission, which will review the contract at its July 23 hearing.
