More Ways We Celebrate Exceptional Service |
|
|
At PDX, we love celebrating the moments that really shine – the ones that reflect what we’re all about: being friendly, knowledgeable, and respectful.
Last week, we talked about the PDX People Customer Service Awards. But guess what? That’s just one of the many ways we recognize the amazing work you do. Here are some other ways we acknowledge great service:
|
| |
|
Annual Excellence in Service Awards
Each year, we throw a special event to celebrate standout employees, selected by their teams to be honored as customer service "superstars." It’s a night to remember: Winners are invited to a festive evening with managers and colleagues to highlight their hard work over the past year.
PDX People Appreciation Week
Every September, we dedicate a whole week to celebrating you! Think food trucks, music, swag, and good vibes all around.
On-the-Spot Recognition
Sometimes great service happens in the moment...and we’re ready for it! Managers have envelopes with $10 gift cards to PDX shops and restaurants, ready to hand out on the spot to say thanks when someone goes above and beyond.
Want to learn more about PDX People recognition? Check out the recognition programs and read about past winners on the PDX People website. You can also nominate an employee who embodies the PDX People values and serves as a shining example of great customer service for next quarter – submit a nomination now.

South Tunnel Closure: On Thursday, Oct. 29, the east end of the south tunnel will close to begin the process of adding an additional moving walkway. This closure is expected to remain in place through early 2027. If you're traveling between the P3 long-term garage and the RCC, there will be signage directing you to use an alternate entrance, adjacent to the Rental Car Center, to the west end.
|
|
|
|
Access to the Security Badging Office remains the same until the full tunnel closure, which is expected in December. We'll keep you posted on those changes later in the year.
Concourse Connector Closure: In November, the Concourse Connector will close nightly from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. as crews install metal security screen track curtains overhead. The north end will close Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 8, and the south end will close Monday, Nov. 9, through Friday, Nov. 13.
Crews will pause work for emergency responder access as needed; work will also pause for travelers with pets that need to access the Pet Relief Area. Passengers with flights connecting between the concourses will need to exit and be re-screened at the appropriate TSA checkpoint.
Baggage Claim: As a reminder, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 27 the center of baggage claim – carousels 4, 5, and half of 6 – will be temporarily closed. If you’re inside baggage claim, you won’t be able to walk directly through baggage claim without going outside.
You’ll see signage along the way to help guide passengers, and employees and volunteers will be there to provide directions. On the ticketing level, there will be temporary signage showing baggage carousel assignments.

Be Knowledgeable:
Employee Screening FAQ |
|
|
You've likely heard that employee screening will launch next year. As we get closer to that date, we're sharing answers to some frequently asked questions.
What equipment will be used for screening?
The screening equipment uses safe, non-ionizing millimeter waves to detect objects. It does not affect pacemakers, pregnancy, or hearing assistance devices.
What does this mean for you?
|
-
Keep moving. Walk through at a normal pace. There's no need to stop, pose, or remove outer clothing.
|
|
| |
|
-
Privacy matters. The equipment uses a gender-neutral avatar to show any detected items, regardless of gender or religious clothing.
- Fewer extra checks. The equipment is designed to detect objects accurately, helping reduce the need for additional screening.

Celebrate Halloween at PDX |
|
|
|
| If your workplace permits, you're encouraged to dress up on Halloween! From classic witch hats to modern memes, dressing up is a great way to show your spirit.
Remember these tricks to only get treats from the security teams at PDX:
|
|
|
|
-
Avoid masks or face coverings that make it difficult to identify you
- Don't bring fake weapons (knives, hatchets, or anything resembling a weapon)
- Your security badge must always remain visible and unobstructed
- Escorting children is strictly prohibited
|
And don't miss any of the scary good fun at PDX!
|
-
Stop by Security Badging: Every year, the Security Badging team creates an immersive Halloween experience. In years past, they've transported visitors to a construction work zone, an old mining town, and even Bikini Bottom – SpongeBob's home on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. So what do they have planned for 2026? You won't know unless you stop by on Thursday, Oct. 29, or Friday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.!
- Trick-or-Treat at the RCC: On Thursday, Oct. 29, or Friday Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m., head to the fourth floor of the RCC for a Halloween open house! You're welcome to bring children or grandchildren in their Halloween costumes for trick-or-treating during these hours.
- Howl-o-Ween with DoveLewis Dogs: The DoveLewis Scare-apy Canine Teams will be at PDX on Friday, Oct 30, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Meet the Howl-o-ween crew, snap a photo with your favorite "monster," and snag some (human) treats!

Congressmen Earl Blumenauer and Peter DeFazio, Julz Clementine, and Port of Portland Executive Director Curtis Robinhold
|
Last week saw the official unveiling of “Going Places,” a new mural at PDX honoring former Oregon Congressmen Earl Blumenauer and Peter DeFazio and their lasting impact on Oregon.
Muralist Julz Clementine’s illustrative style brings together individual panels that flow into one bright, bold, cohesive piece, which is located near the airport’s MAX station. Not only did Julz use all 15 (!!) colors in the PDX brand palette, the mural is filled with symbols that represent Oregon, transportation, and the two congressmen. Here are a few callouts...
Honoring Congressman Blumenauer
Bicycle: The bike Blumenauer famously rode to the Capitol for 30 years
Bow Tie and Bike Pin: His signature look – a bow tie and Congressional Bike Caucus lapel pin
Natural Landscapes: Multnomah Falls, Mt. Hood, and the Vista House, reflecting his work to preserve the Gorge
Honoring Congressman DeFazio
Coastal Bridges: DeFazio’s work securing funding to fix and save historic bridges from demolition
Railroad Tunnel: His efforts to secure federal funding to keep the Coos Bay Rail Line running
Devil’s Staircase Wilderness: His dedication to protecting habitat for endangered species
Dodge Dart: His classic car that became a symbol of “the people’s congressman”
Honoring Both Congressmen
MAX: Blumenauer’s fight for federal funding and both congressmen’s support for light rail expansion
Aviation: Their shared advocacy for airport and infrastructure safety
Thanks to everyone who helped this project take flight, our partners at the Portland Street Art Alliance, and all those who stopped by to offer words of appreciation and encouragement as Julz worked diligently over the summer!
