THE ACTIVITIES - SKIING A GLACIER + MORE!
It's hard to beat Switzerland for natural beauty, and Saas-fee has it to spare. As one of the only snow-sure villages in Europe, Saas offers one of the longest ski seasons (from November to April) and again in summer when Olympic ski-racers train on the glacier and others can join, too.
The Capra has the cutest "ski locker" situation in a historic chalet right next to the town's lift, where you can grab your gear and hop on the gondola. On the way home the host served us tea for the short walk back to the hotel.
The skiing was lovely with views down the valley and glimpses of the ice-blue glacier peaking out from under snow along several runs.
Saas is ideal for skiers who want guaranteed snow and an authentic Swiss mountain village. Those who want to sample a few ski areas, can try The Capra's Ski Safari offering a drive (or helicopter) transport to try a few of the 5 resorts within an hour's drive (including Zermatt).
On our 2nd day, half of our group took the snowshoe option which they raved about for its peaceful forest scenery. A few of us were blown away by the cool Via Ferrata experience, which was not at all as scary as I expected. Our two, professional alpine guides lead us to the Saas-fee gorge, which was, well, gorgeous, where we hiked, climbed, swung out over the gorge, zip-lined into a cave and rappelled all while securely clamped-in and safe. The scenery was stunning and the experience exhilarating. The town also has a sledging (aka sledding) route that kids and adults enjoy.
With just a few days, I feel like we didn't even scratch the surface on the all the activities there were to do at The Capra and the tiny-but-mighty Saas-fee.
