SWISS MOUNTAIN HIGH

pe.PR here, excited to share my recent experience at 11,000 feet skiing a glacier, hiking a via ferrata, and toasting Wham! all from The Capra in the authentic village of Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where I led a group of advisors and media last month.
And guess what? You're invited, too!
Read on for more about this little-known gem, and to see how you can visit.

THE CAPRA - QUIET LUXURY + WELLNESS

The low-key luxury hotel was completed last year and is the passion project of owners George and Dina, who fell in love with the authentic Swiss village, and because Switzerland is dominated by large hotels, envisioned their 38-room wellness hotel to feel like a home. And The Capra does with GM Jurgen greeting guests when they arrive and even serving raclette in the wine cellar for private groups.
The Capra strikes the perfect balance between cozy and contemporary with plenty of wood-clad walls and roaring fireplaces, paired with artistic lighting and modern art for dramatic moments in hallways and in the spa.
Wellness is a big focus: The Peak Health Spa punches above its weight for a boutique hotel, with beautiful saunas, cold plunge options, relaxation areas, indoor/outdoor pool and more. The bashful will appreciate the option to book The Capra's private spa (because note that the Swiss believe in spa nudity).
The hotel's restaurant, Brasserie 1809, serves natural food sourced from the area, which luckily is also the most-important wine region in Switzerland, making dining an adventure of discovery from local venison to gamay. The wine cellar is stocked and a great hideaway spot for fondue – our dinner there with Jurgen was a highlight.

THE AUTHENTIC VILLAGE of SAAS-FEE

Coming from ILTM, we flew to Zurich where we hopped on Swiss Rail right from the airport (Swiss precision!). As the most sustainable village in Switzerland, Saas-fee has always been car-free, so once we arrived we were delivered by electric van to The Capra.
For a little village, Saas-fee delivers with Swiss Alps charm (think historic chalet and wood carvings) and unparalleled access to activities. You can access the glacier right from town on foot(!) for snowshoeing, skiing or hiking, or opt for a more chill activity of riding the cable car to the highest revolving restaurant in the world for lunch.
The entire town is walkable and you won't find chain stores, but instead wine & cheese shops, restaurant and bars, gift and gear shops – things you won't find anywhere else. One of our favorite experiences was a post-ski lunch of traditional Swiss dishes from the area served at the coziest Restaurant Schäferstube. We were hosted by the adorable wife of the chef, who also happened to be the mayor's daughter.
FUN FACT: Saas-fee was popular during the '80s and '90s – Wham! filmed its "Last Christmas" video there 40 years ago – but fell off the radar. We toasted the memory of George Michael with a Wham! cocktail in The Capra's lounge.

THE ACTIVITIES - SKIING A GLACIER + MORE!

It's hard to beat Switzerland for natural beauty, and Saas-fee has it to spare. As one of the only snow-sure villages in Europe, Saas offers one of the longest ski seasons (from November to April) and again in summer when Olympic ski-racers train on the glacier and others can join, too.
The Capra has the cutest "ski locker" situation in a historic chalet right next to the town's lift, where you can grab your gear and hop on the gondola. On the way home the host served us tea for the short walk back to the hotel.
The skiing was lovely with views down the valley and glimpses of the ice-blue glacier peaking out from under snow along several runs.
Saas is ideal for skiers who want guaranteed snow and an authentic Swiss mountain village. Those who want to sample a few ski areas, can try The Capra's Ski Safari offering a drive (or helicopter) transport to try a few of the 5 resorts within an hour's drive (including Zermatt).
On our 2nd day, half of our group took the snowshoe option which they raved about for its peaceful forest scenery. A few of us were blown away by the cool Via Ferrata experience, which was not at all as scary as I expected. Our two, professional alpine guides lead us to the Saas-fee gorge, which was, well, gorgeous, where we hiked, climbed, swung out over the gorge, zip-lined into a cave and rappelled all while securely clamped-in and safe. The scenery was stunning and the experience exhilarating. The town also has a sledging (aka sledding) route that kids and adults enjoy.
With just a few days, I feel like we didn't even scratch the surface on the all the activities there were to do at The Capra and the tiny-but-mighty Saas-fee.
