Tips for Grads: How to keep up academic momentum over the summer

Personal Effectiveness
Looking to keep your motivation running high and academic habits strong this summer? Try focusing on the five R’s to really maximize your downtime.
Research: Explore your field and find articles or podcasts that explain new, exciting concepts which both fuel your passion and further your expertise of the field. Read up on research your professors have conducted and familiarize yourself with what they specialize in.
Rapport: Now is a prime opportunity to reach out to your professors and start building rapport so you’re familiar with each other once your course starts. Not only will having this initial connection be helpful should you have to talk to them about grades or class content, it can also help you land a reference letter for your future endeavors.
Resume: While periodically editing your resume’s writing and format is always a good idea, use your spare time to enhance the content. Look into professional organizations that offer networking opportunities that propel your career forward or volunteer groups which let your philanthropic side shine.
Reflection: As you get further into your academic career, it’s important to stay focused on your ultimate career or educational goals. Keep yourself motivated by reflecting on what inspired you to enroll in your current graduate program, your overall academic goals, and how far you’ve come.
Reward: Take a moment to appreciate all of the hard work you’ve accomplished in your academic career thus far and reward yourself for it!
