Hi there! I'm Rachel Branco, one of the instructors and advisors for the NSBH major. I teach Molecular Neuroscience, pre-med Biochemistry, and several NSBH electives related to how exogenous compounds affect the nervous system (like DRUGS! or TOXINS! or .... are they the same thing?). After getting my undergraduate degree in Texas, I lived in the Netherlands on a Fulbright scholarship (spent most of the time giving cocaine to mice), then did my PhD at Emory in Atlanta (briefly giving meth to monkeys before settling back down and giving cocaine to mice again). I've been here at Notre Dame since 2018 and find that nowadays, I hardly ever give cocaine to mice. I spearhead both the London and Jerusalem summer study abroad trips. My husband and I have two kids and two dogs. When not spending time with them, I enjoy running, biking, reading fantasy novels, and tending to my floriferous pollinator-friendly garden.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Mentor-Mentee Night! We estimate that around 50 people attended. It was great to hear the conversations between upperclassmen and underclassmen, and everyone seemed to have a great time with both their peers and mentors/mentees.

The Senior Leadership Committee would like to invite all of you to participate in lab shadowing this semester! This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in becoming involved in research and for those currently in a lab! Those who might be looking into joining a lab have the opportunity to “shadow” those who are currently in research labs.
For those involved in a research lab: If you are willing to let students shadow you, please fill out this Google form to tell us a little bit about yourself and your research lab. Please be sure that your PI and/or lab protocols are able to accommodate having a shadowing student before filling out the form! Once we have a decent number of submissions, we will send out your information so that students interested in shadowing you can get in touch and work out a time to shadow.
For those interested in shadowing: Hang tight and keep an eye out for an email with more information. After we hear back from students willing to let you shadow, we will send out information on their lab and contact info. Once we send this out, it will be up to you to get in touch with a lab you want to shadow and work out the logistics! Please be mindful and respectful of their time as they are taking time out of their schedule to show you what their lab is up to.
