| Thank You Community Outreach Week Volunteers
More than 1,100 alumni, students, faculty and staff members, and friends of the university participated in Community Outreach Week 2017. Projects varied from a Wii Bowling Tournament with senior citizens to preparing food for families in need to fighting blight in Detroit! It was a powerful example of the Grand Valley Laker Effect. Volunteers from this week and throughout the year will be celebrated at the Volunteer Celebration and Service Awards on Friday, May 12.

| 2017 Distinguished AlumniEglantina Gjermeni, ’98, is this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for excelling in her chosen profession and reflecting favorably upon herself, her community, and the university. She earned a master’s degree in social work from Grand Valley in 1998 while attending the university as an international student. In 2015, Gjermeni was named the Minister of Urban Development for the Republic of Albania.

| 2017 Outstanding Educator
Sheryl Vlietstra, ’88, earned this year’s Alumni Association Outstanding Educator Award. The award is presented to a faculty member who has had a significant impact on the careers of alumni. An alumna herself, Vlietstra earned a master’s degree in education from Grand Valley in 1988. She joined Grand Valley’s faculty in 2000 as an affiliate professor of elementary teacher education. Vlietstra helped initiate and lead the Michigan Literacy Project, which provides recent graduates with funds for building their classroom libraries in underserved Michigan school districts.

| Conquering the Ironman World ChampionshipJeff Agar, ’85, competed in the Ironman this past fall while pushing or pulling his 22-year-old son, Johnny Agar. Johnny was born with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. “We understand that what we are doing is more than a race,” said Johnny. “Our ultimate goal really is to have people inspired to do more than they think they can.” Read the Agar's story and more in the recent edition of the GV Magazine.

GVSU Night at Comerica Park Tickets on SaleJoin the GVSU community for the first ever GVSU Night at Comerica Park! It will be an evening full of Laker pride as the Detroit Tigers take on the Kansas City Royals. Every ticket sold, through the dedicated link, will include a $5 donation from the Tigers to support the GVSU Scholarship Fund, and the first 1,500 tickets sold will include a limited edition co-branded Detroit Tigers and GVSU baseball hat.

| Grand Valley Celebrates International Women's DayThe world celebrated International Women's Day on March 8, and Grand Valley State University paid tribute to its own women who are leaders, mentors and trailblazers. Grand Valley enrolls, graduates and employs strong women. At GVSU: 24 of 50 student senators are women, 608 of 1,195 faculty members are women, and 253 of 577 students athletes are women. Their impact and accomplishments can be felt around the world.

RSVP today for the 22nd Annual Spring Classic and Cash Draw on Saturday, April 15. You'll have the opportunity to preview the 2017 Laker Football Team and talk with our Head Football Coach, Matt Mitchell, plus the entire football staff at a post-game celebration at the Alumni House. Join hundreds of your fellow alumni and colleagues for the 45th Annual Irwin Golf Outing on June 1. You'll have an opportunity to meet Laker coaches and student-athletes as they cheer you on! Prizes are available for contest holes and winning teams. A $10,000 cash prize and a car lease awaits the lucky individual scoring a hole-in-one! Proceeds support over 500 student athletes and the scholarships that help them achieve academically and athletically.

Grand Valley's leading health programs are expanding to equip an increasing student body with the education and skills they will need in their profession. The Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall will be the newest addition to accommodate more classrooms and laboratory facilities in the heart of Grand Rapid's medical zone.
