The University Communicator Network is your network. Now with nearly 200 members, we want to hear from you! What type of presentations would you like to see? Following the August 5 meeting, another UCN meeting will be held in the winter semester. Please send ideas of presenters or topics to Michele Coffill, coffillm@gvsu.edu.
What newsletter topics do you want to read about? UCN newsletters are sent monthly and cover a variety of communication topics. What would be helpful to you? Please send ideas to Sarah Dudinetz, dudinesa@gvsu.edu.
Don't forget to connect with fellow communicators via the UCN Zoom Chat #UCN.

Storytellers: Join this UCN committee! |
A committee of storytellers is moving under the umbrella of the University Communicator Network and will be open to all UCN members.
The Story Committee was established several years ago by University Marketing. Participants joined monthly Zoom meetings to connect and share innovative ideas, collaborate on content creation and discover overlapping narratives.
These meetings will continue to be led by Elizabeth Lienau, marketing project manager, and Nick Viau, marketing and branding content manager. Meetings are held at 10 a.m. on the last Wednesday of each month: June 26, July 31 and August 28.
Please contact Liz, lienaue@gvsu.edu, or Nick, viauni@gvsu.edu, if you are interested in joining.

Meta messages: Beware of scams |
If you've received a message on Facebook or Instagram messenger claiming that your business page has violated certain guidelines or rights, you're not alone — and there's a good chance the message is spam. These messages leverage a sense of urgency by threatening to delete your account/page. See this example that the Seidman College of Business received:
|
Through conversations with social media admins across GVSU and other universities, these spam messages are on the rise. Here's how to spot a spam message:
|
-
Look at the name of the sender. If it is a completely random human name, it is more than likely spam (In general, Meta will not contact you via a direct message. They will send you a Facebook notification or an email from a legitimate Facebook email address).
- Check for typos throughout their message, including in links (in the example above, there is a typo in their 'review request' link).
-
Spam messages will often prompt you to click a link where they then ask you to enter personal information. Like the example above, the link will often be to a site other than Facebook. Do NOT click these links or provide any personal information!
-
If you're receiving an influx of these messages, check out this helpful LinkedIn article that gives instructions on how to filter spam messages out of your inbox.

Join us for the next UCN meeting on August 5, 3-4:30 p.m., at the L. William Seidman Center, when University Marketing leaders will discuss the evolution of GVSU's brand.
Jennifer Allard, associate vice president of Marketing and Branding, and Bryan Bickford, associate director of Advertising and Writing, will give a presentation about the new brand and recap the perception research from focus groups.
