Hi there,
Yesterday, we previewed the housing registration process for the 2024-2025 academic year. As a student with an approved housing-based accommodation from Disability Support Services (DSS), we know that having your housing accommodation met each year is critical to your success as a student. Today, we are sharing additional guidance to help you navigate housing registration.
FIRST! …if you are a rising 3rd- or 4th-year student and do not plan to live on-campus next year, there is nothing further you need to do. You may archive this email.
We wish you the best of luck with your off-campus housing search or continued off-campus living. Our guidance today is for students who are required to or choose to live in on-campus housing next academic year.

Your Housing Registration Steps
|
Roommate Discovery
Today, you can start some initial steps via your GW Home portal, including answering roommate matching questions, creating roommate groups, and finding potential roommates. Even if you have an accommodation for a fully single room, these steps are still open for you. We encourage all students to begin these steps as soon as possible and if you plan to live with other people, begin considering who you want to live with.
|
Room Renewal
If your current room is eligible for Room Renewal, meets your housing accommodation requirements, and you desire to live in your room again next year, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 14 you may complete your housing registration by participating in Room Renewal. If you are eligible for and desire to participate in Room Renewal we strongly encourage you to participate!
|
General Housing Registration
If you are not eligible or do not want to participate in Room Renewal, between February 28 and March 13, is when you will finish your housing registration. During this time, you’ll create a ranked list of your preferred buildings and room types. We’ll use this list to assign you to a hall and room as high as we’re able to from your list.

Assignment Priority for Select Housing Accommodations |
Since you will register for housing at the same time as students who do not have DSS housing accommodations, we know it’s important to you that your housing accommodation be met. To do this, some types will receive priority in assignment. You may ask,
what does priority mean? It means after everyone has registered for housing, we’ll assign students with DSS-specific housing accommodations before others. Everyone receives their housing assignment on March 27 regardless of priority, but we hope telling you that we are prioritizing students with housing accommodations in the process helps in your understanding of how the process works.
The following housing accommodations receive assignment priority:
|
- Room Occupancy-Based Accommodations: Single (Not Suite-Style), Single (Suite-Style), max double occupancy room
-
Private Bathrooms and/or Private Kitchens
- Fully Accessible Units
|
NOTE: Priority does not guarantee a student assignment their #1 choice in the ranked preference list of buildings and room types during General Housing Registration.
Do you have a housing accommodation that isn’t on the list? We will meet your accommodation for your housing assignment for the 2024-2025 academic year, without requiring priority in assignment over other students. Similarly, housing accommodations not tied to specific types of housing (such as being approved for an emotional support animal or receiving a personal microfridge) can be met no matter where someone lives.

A Few Other Notes on Housing Assignments
|
- Generally, rising 3rd- and 4th-year students receive assignment priority over rising 2nd-year students
-
Rising 3rd- and 4th-year students with housing accommodations for singles with private bathrooms/kitchens that can only be accommodated in a 2nd year hall may be assigned to one of those buildings.
-
Rising 2nd-year students whose DSS housing accommodations can only be met by living in specific residence halls (South Hall, for example) may be assigned there, though Campus Living & Residential Education will attempt to assign students to other upperclass residence halls first.
-
Students with a single (suite-style) accommodation can create roommate groups with friends who don’t have DSS housing accommodations to live in suites with single bedrooms. However, we will prioritize meeting the accommodation for the single bedroom for the student with the housing accommodation, even if it means roommates without an approved accommodation have to share a bedroom in the suite.
-
All students who complete their housing registration during General Housing Registration will learn of their housing assignment on Wednesday, March 27.
|
NOTE: Priority does not guarantee a student assignment their #1 choice in the ranked preference list of buildings and room types during General Housing Registration.
