International Student and GE Support

There are more than 500 international UO graduate students, from 90 countries, contributing invaluable knowledge, life experiences, and perspectives to our university community. We remain committed to working with campus partners to support these students.
Here are three facts for international students:
FACT: International students may receive support filing their nonresident taxes.
The university and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) offer tax support, including workshops, access to tax preparation software, and pre-paid fees to file federal returns in the relevant tax year. Per the GTFF CBA, the UO provides free access to state and federal tax filing software to all international graduate students who have held GE positions in the relevant year.
FACT: International students may stay in the U.S. with an expired visa.
The visa allows the student to enter the U.S. The student, and their dependents, can stay legally in the U.S. as long as the student maintains their student status. If the student or their dependents need to leave the U.S., however, they should consult with ISSS before leaving to identify how they will update their visa in order to return to the U.S.
FACT: International students may work off-campus.
International students may work off-campus, for pay, via the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program. CPT includes three types of experiences the student may complete. All students should consult with ISSS about qualifying for CPT and securing this type of paid training. Updates about enrollment fees are forthcoming; please continue to visit the website or consult with ISSS about how to secure employment and enroll in CPT.
The Division of Graduate Studies offers free programming and services to assist graduate students with seeking professional development opportunities, including CPT related opportunities.
If you have questions, please contact ISSS for support.
